Lee 1 2015 Rocky Mountain GSA Conference Grant Proposal December, 5 2014 Prepared by Jeremie Lee University of Idaho Geology Club Lee 2 2015 Rocky Mountain GSA Conference Grant Proposal By Jeremie Lee December 2014 Executive Summary The University of Idaho's Department of Geology and student Jeremie Lee would like to propose a group trip to the 2015 Rocky Mountain Geological Society of America Conference in Casper Wyoming to ASUI for review. The goal will be to attend the 2015 Rocky Mountain section meeting of the Geological Society of America at the University of Wyoming in Casper Wyoming. The main purpose of this trip is to bring students, faculty, GSA members, and potential employers together to present papers relating to Geology. A few of the topics covered are: oil, gas, uranium, coal, oil shale, paleontology, and many other topics relevant to the Geology of the Rocky Mountains. This will give students the opportunity to meet/network with other peers in their field, see real world applications of the things they are learning in classes such as: (Volcanology, Structural Geology, Paleontology, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, Geophysics, and Hydrology) , and to meet potential employers. The University of Idaho's Department of Geology would like to request approximately $2,000 for travel costs and housing. The exact amount is unknown as the exact number of students attending is still unknown. The proposed trips exact dates are May 20-24, 2015 with May 21-23 being the dates of the conference and a day before and after for travel. Lee 3 Current Situation The Department of Geology at the University of Idaho is a small undergraduate/graduate program. The University of Idaho's small size and location provides the opportunities for students to work personally with internationally recognized professors at the highest rated University in Idaho. The goal of the University of Idaho's Geology Department is to provide the opportunities to geology students to be able to see real world applications of what they are studying. The focus of this trip is to meet and network with peers, faculty, GSA members, and employers. Students are also encouraged to submit their own papers for presentation, giving the University of Idaho credibility and notability at the national level. The Geological Society of America is a global professional society with over 26,000 members in 115 countries. This society brings earth scientists together to share their findings/results from research of earth processes. GSA's mission is "to advance geosciences research and discovery, service to society, stewardship of Earth, and the geosciences profession." Specific Objectives By attending the 2015 Rocky Mountain Section Meeting of the Geological Society of America conference in Casper Wyoming students will take away the following: Become a member of GSA. Meet fellow earth science students around the nation and see what type of work and skill level they are performing at. Network with faculty and GSA members, gaining valuable contacts in their field of study. See real world applications of what they are studying. Students will learn about various earth science topics relevant to the Rocky Mountains. Topics include: oil, gas, uranium, coal, oil shale, and paleontology just to name a few. Last, students will be able to meet and network with potential employers in their field. Lee 4 Deliverables By receiving funding by ASUI to attend the 2015 Rocky Mountain Section Meeting of the Geological Society of America conference in Casper Wyoming ASUI will provide the opportunity for students in the Department of Geology at the University of Idaho to gain an understanding of real world applications in their field of study. Students are also encouraged to submit their own papers for presentation. this will give the University of Idaho and ASUI national recognition as a credible source for research and future projects. Lastly, students will be required to submit a short summary of what they gained from the experience along with a brief summary of their favorite paper presented. Timeline The proposed trip to the 2015 Rocky Mountain Section Meeting of the Geological Society of America will consist of 3 days of presentations by students, faculty, and GSA members. The exact dates are May 21-23, 2015 in Casper Wyoming. The first day May 20, 2015 will consist of traveling 865 miles from the Moscow Idaho to Casper Wyoming via Geology Department vehicles (This will be much cheaper than the $800 round trip ticket per person from Moscow/Pullman airport to Casper Wyoming). Upon arrival students will be checked into the La Quinta Inn Casper at $30.00 per person or $60.00 per room. students will be responsible for their own meal cost. May 21-23, 2015 students will attend the GSA conference on the University of Wyoming campus. Students will be listening to presentations, networking with peers, faculty, and GSA members during these three days. The final day May 24, 2015 will be spent traveling the 865 miles back to Moscow Idaho. During the trip it will cost approximately $500-$1,000 for fuel (depending on how many vehicles are taken). Hotels costs will be $30.00 per person and approximately $1,000 total, depending on the number of students.
