Recycling facts at OCU
Recycling is the easiest and most effective way to act in an eco-friendly way. You can do your part by recycling paper, bottles,
cans, and more. Since 2009, OCU has had a university-wide initiative for recycling, with over 120 recycling containers across
campus. The information below is designed to help you become familiar with what can be recycled on campus and
where.
Paper

OCU recycles all forms of paper and cardboard, including newspaper, copy paper, and boxes.
Scary Fact: Due to unrecycled newspapers in the US, the equivalent of
500,000 trees are dumped into landfills each week.
Good Fact: Last year, OCU recycled 20 tons of paper and over 7,000 pounds of cardboard.
Plastic

OCU recycles the following types of plastic: 2, 5, 6. To find out whether a plastic container is recyclable, look for the
number on the bottom of a plastic container
Scary fact: 25 million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour.
Good Fact: 1 recycled bottle saves enough energy to run a 100 watt bulb for 4 hours.
Aluminum

OCU’s newest recycling effort is for aluminum cans. Aluminum recycling receptacles can be found in the Chapel
Scary fact: 133 square miles of aluminum are used to wrap Hershey’s candies each day (AND they are
recyclable).
Good Fact: 20 recycled cans can be made out of the same amount of energy it takes to make 1 new can.
