Works Cited "American Experience." PBS. PBS. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/biography/kennedys-bio-johnfitzgerald/>. These PBS web pages proved to be a valuable source of information. The American Experience TV series is terrific, and though I have not seen these films on the Kennedy family, I expect that they are also excellent. "American Experience." PBS. PBS. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/biography/kennedys-bio-johnfrancis/>. Same as above – this website is a wealth of concise, factual information, and is terrific for the portion of the lesson that requires students to gather information. "Boston Swears in First Irish-born Mayor." Mass Moments. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=10>. A brief website biographical entry on Hugh O’Brien. Nothing groundbreaking here in terms of info, but a good, concise place to get info for O’Brien’s bio. Handlin, Oscar. Boston's Immigrants: A Study in Acculturation. Cambridge, MA: Belknap of Harvard UP, 1979. Print. Not a bad book, but not the most exciting or reader friendly book I came across. It was good for background research, but would not be a student friendly book. "Hugh O'Brien - Boston Mayor from 1885 to 1888, First Boston Mayor of Irish Descent." Hugh O'Brien - Boston Mayor from 1885 to 1888, First Boston Mayor of Irish Descent. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.celebrateboston.com/biography/mayor/hugh-obrien.htm>. Another Hugh O’Brien web site. Little is written about him, so every bit of information is useful for the student driven research. Nothing terribly useful here. "James Michael Curley." James Michael Curley. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/page_massachusetts/col2content/main-content-list/title_curley_james.html>. A standard web entry for Curley. Good for accessing a quick bio on him. Not particularly in-depth. "Joseph P. Kennedy." - John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.jfklibrary.org/JFK/The-Kennedy-Family/Joseph-P-Kennedy.aspx>. "Life of John F. Kennedy." - John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.jfklibrary.org/JFK/Life-of-John-F-Kennedy.aspx>. Both of the links above are for Kennedy information at the JFK library. No surprisingly they are both well written, detailed, with lots of information. This website proved to be a fairly comprehensive collection of information on the Kennedys, though a bit biased. (Example – The bio of Ted Kennedy seems to have missed the Chappaquiddick Incident entirely, as well as his failed White House run in 1980. The rumors of JFK as an adulterer seem to also go missing here also.) As long as students are aware of the source of this information, it is terrific. "Mayor Curley Jeopardizes Election." Mass Moments: Mayor Curley Jeopardizes Election. Web. 22 May 2012. <http://www.massmoments.org/moment.cfm?mid=317>. Brief, useful biographical information on Curley. This is an interesting article that students can use easily. O'Connor, Thomas H. The Boston Irish: A Political History. Boston: Northeastern UP, 1995. Print. Without question, the most useful book used on this project. O’Connor has written a book that is both great for research, as well as a book that would be fine to give students excerpts of to read. Puleo, Stephen. A City so Grand: The Rise of an American Metropolis, Boston 1850-1900. Boston: Beacon, 2010. Print. This was also a fairly useful book. Well written, by an author who is a past TAH presenter. This book only had bits and pieces that were used in the project, but would be a great read just for pleasure. Quinlin, Michael P. Irish Boston. Guilford, CT: Globe Pequot, 2004. Print. Not a scholarly history book, this is written for the tourist, or visitor to the city. Most of the books seems written to reference places one might visit in the city. It is however written at a lower level, and a few excerpts would be good for class.
