Thanks to all students and parents
who contributed to our successful
Terry Fox Walk/Run on Friday,
September 30. The sun shone as
the St Ignatius staff and students
walked, jogged and ran in honour
of the 32nd anniversary of the
Marathon of Hope. Thanks to your
generosity, we raised $1910.
Thank you for helping keep
Terry's dream alive. We
appreciate your support of this
very Canadian cause! Mrs. Schut,
Mrs. Mencfeld and Ms. Starr.
Diocesan Mass
On Thursday, September 29 staff
members and parents from across
our School Board attended a
special Mass in honour of
Catholic Education. Many thanks
to Michelle Gauthier for
representing our great school and
for taking up the gifts at this Mass,
held at the Cathedral in Hamilton.
From the desk of Mrs.
Cotnam, Vice-Principal
I will be on a short medical leave
and will be away from school for
approximately 6 to 8 weeks starting
on September 28th. We are fortunate
to have Andrea Welsh-Devlin come
into the Acting Vice- Principal role
in my absence. Due to this change
in Mrs. Welsh-Devlin’s role, we are
welcoming Mrs. Rose D’Souza who
will temporarily replace her as our
Special Education Resource
Teacher. Collaboratively, Mrs.
Welsh-Devlin and Mrs. RoseWideman will continue caring for
your children and providing the
services that they require.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Linda Cotnam
Open House
Thanks to all in our community who
supported our Second Annual Open
House! We appreciate your
enthusiasm, energy and engagement
with our teachers and programming
at the best school in the province!
We collected $514.00 in donations
to be given to The African Relief
Fund and Our Hawks with Hearts
social justice initiative. Thank you!
Monthly Masses
Please join us at our next School
Mass on Tuesday, October 18 at
9:15 a.m. We welcome everyone to
our celebration of the Eucharist and
we are happy if you can come!
Thank you
In various studies across the
province and throughout Canada
and the United States, research
proves that highly successful
schools and students have many
things in common, one of which is
that these schools have, “parental
and community support that ensures
that all students are prepared for
school the moment they step on
campus.” At Saint Ignatius of
Loyola, we are grateful that our
parent community recognizes
punctuality, attentiveness and being
ready to learn are top priorities!
Bake Sale News
Thank-you to ALL who supported
the bake sale, whether you baked
and/or purchased the baked goods.
A special thank-you goes to
Mrs. Kate Molodzik and an
anonymous donor for their
donations. A second special thankyou goes to Mrs. Kenny's grade 5
class who weren't able to attend the
bake sale because we sold out YET
donated their money to fighting
breast cancer. This shows TRUE
St. Ignatius spirit.
Ms. Ormesher and her students are
to be commended for their
outstanding job in running the bake
sale. The team of 27 who are in the
run on October 2nd appreciate
everyone's efforts. We raised
$912.00.

School Board Korea Trip
Safe Schools Information
for Parents
Mr. Asselin will be in Korea on official School
Board business, travelling with another
Principal and two Superintendents of
Education, from Monday, October 24 until
Tuesday, November 1. Mrs. Andrea WelshDevlin, while he is away, will be the Acting
Principal. Mrs. Welsh-Devlin will assume this
role, in Linda Cotnam’s absence, whenever Mr.
Asselin is requested to be out of the school.
Mrs. Melanie Rose-Wideman will also be our
Teacher-in-Charge during these times,
supporting Mrs. Welsh-Devlin. We know that
you will give Mrs. Welsh-Devlin and Mrs.
Rose-Wideman your full support during any of
Mr. Asselin’s absences from the best school in
the province!
New legislation that was passed on
February 1, 2010, affects how all
school board employees handle
serious student incidents at school and
other school-related activities.
Yearbooks
Saint Ignatius of Loyola Yearbooks are still
available for a short time in the Main Office for
the small sum of $20.00. We urge you to get
your copy now!
Adopt a School Program
St. Ignatius of Loyola has again been chosen to
participate in the Adopt-A-School program.
This program is supported by the Guelph
Storm Hockey Club whereby local businesses
purchase and donate season tickets to area
schools.
The tickets are used to acknowledge four
students and their families as reward incentives
each month. We would like to thank the
Guelph Storm for the opportunity to be
involved with this project.
Career Pathways
All grade eight students will travel to the River
Run Centre on October 12th to participate in the
Career Pathways presentation. This exciting
event is sponsored by the Guelph Chamber of
Commerce and provides students with an
opportunity to be introduced to career options
they may have an interest in exploring.
Bill 157, Keeping our Kids Safe at
School Act, requires that:



All school staff report serious
student incidents that could
lead to suspension or
expulsion to the Principal in
writing
Principals are expected to
contact the parents of victims
of these types of incidents.
Staff will work directly with
students to respond to
incidents at school that have
a negative impact on the
school climate. These could
include inappropriate and
disrespectful behaviour, such
as racist or sexist comments,
graffiti or vandalism –
incidents that are
unacceptable in our schools,
as well as incidents that can
lead to suspension or
expulsion.

International Walk to

October is International Walk to
School month, with Wednesday
October 5th being International Walk
to School Day.
To help promote daily physical
activity and consideration of the
environment TAKE THE
CHALLENGE and walk, blade, skip
or hop to school – but don’t drive.
Bus students can also participate by
walking at home or on the school
grounds.
The walk to school group will be
giving out stickers and
congratulations to all walkers as they
arrive at school on this day. We will
also hold a draw for a free pair of
shoes, as well as for the class with the
highest participation. This class will
receive the “Golden Shoe Award,”
currently on display in our trophy
cabinet.

Nut-Free
Provincial Elections
Saint Ignatius of Loyola, like many
schools in Ontario, has many
vulnerable students whose health care
needs require dietary restrictions. One
of the most common and important of
these restrictions is being nut-free
throughout each and every day in order
to avoid serious, and in some cases,
fatal reactions. For these reasons,
Saint Ignatius of Loyola is a voluntary
nut-free school. We urge all parents
to assist their children in packing
lunches and snacks that do not contain
nuts.
On October 6 a polling station will
be held at our school all day until
9:30 p.m. that evening. The gym
will be used for this event and staff
are being requested to park in the
Visitor’s Parking Lot. We apologize
for any inconvenience this may cause
our parents or visitors who ordinarily
park in our Visitor’s Parking Lot.
There will be no visitor’s parking on
Election Day, October 6.
We thank you for your kind and
considerate care for others as we
continue to move forward in thinking
about the safety of all of our
community members!
Student Pick-Up
For safety reasons, parents are required
to sign-in at the Main Office when
visiting our school. If you are picking
up your child after regular school
hours (8:00-4:00 p.m. Monday to
Friday), please exercise one of the
following options:
1. Wait outside for your child
2. Wait inside on the bench at the
Living Wall for your child
3. Enter the GS Care door and wait
there if they attend GS Care
Thanks for your support for the safety
of all of our children!
Public Health
Immunization
The Menactra, Hepatitis B, for grade
seven students and the HPV
vaccination for grade 8 girls (optional)

PD Day
Friday, October 21 is a professional
development day for teachers. There
is no school for students that day.
Guelph Police Programs
Officers Frank and Robin from the
Guelph Police will visit our school
on Wednesday, October 12. They
will share the ‘new’ PC Herman with
our K-Grade Ones, seat belt safety
with the Grade Two’s, computer
safety with the Grade Three and
Fours, and anti-bullying strategies
with the Grade Fives. The Bus and
Street Patrollers will also receive a
pizza lunch that day! Many thanks
to Frank and Robin for your
dedication to the safety of our
students!

Spirit Days
Welcome St. Ignatius of Loyola Hawks! To
foster and sustain school spirit amongst our
school community we will be having spirit
days throughout the year. The theme of these
spirit days will be announced to the students
as well a written in their agendas. We
encourage everyone to participate in these
days as they are both fun and will unite
students both young and old. An upcoming
spirit day in October will be on Monday,
October 31st. Students will be encouraged to
wear either a Hallowe’en costume or orange
and black. Please leave accessories at home to
reduce lost items or injury. Stay tuned for
further information on spirit days and themes!
Sub Day
Subs will be served on October 13th.
The order forms will be sent home

Safety Patrols
Cross Country
Scholastic Bookfair
Our street and bus patrols are now in
place and we would like to thank these
students for taking on this important
role. As parents, you can help to ensure
the success of this safety program by
continuing to stress with your child that
they are to listen to the patrols and help
them to keep students safe. Just a
reminder that during the hours of
7:00 -9:00 a.m. and 3:00-4:00 p.m. all
vehicles are asked to refrain from
making a left hand turn on our busy
parking lot. This will ensure that
students are safe when crossing with
our street patrols at these pivotal times.
The St. Ignatius of Loyola Hawks
showed great sportsmanship at the
St. Peter Invitational Meet. Thanks
to all the coaches, Mrs. RoseWideman, Mrs. Matteis, Mrs. Billings,
Mrs. Duffy and Mrs. Murphy.
St. Ignatius had quite a few top 10
finishers across the grades.
The Bookfair this fall has
been a great success. We
established a goal of
$4000.00 dollars, however
we went above and beyond
by spending all of our dimes
and nickels. Our total was
$5,490.30 which means that
we can buy many more books
for our library and further fill
up all of our shelves. Thank
you so much to all those who
purchased books and who
helped out during our
Tuesday, September 20th
Open House.

Magazine Fundraiser
On Sept 29, we held our
Magazine Subscription Fundraiser
Assembly. This important Fundraiser
will not only help your family increase
their reading for pleasure but it’s also a
nice way to encourage others to read by
giving a subscription as a gift at
Christmas. There are great incentives
offered by QSP, the Canadian company
hosting this fundraiser, for students and
their families who participate. Over
700 titles are offered for subscription,
and you will save over 80% off the
newsstand price on magazines such as
Reader’s Digest, Today’s Parent,
Macleans, Canadian Geographic, etc.
All funds raised from this project will
go towards events selected by our
Catholic School Council. These
include technology and classroom
enrichment programs. Thank you to
Mrs. Guardiero and her team!

Boys and Girls
Soccer
All the athletes trained hard. A
number of the athletes will participate
in the City and County Championships
on Tuesday, October 4th at Bishop
Macdonell. Also, the coaches would
like to thank all the extra helpers from
last week’s meet: Ms. Ormesher, Mr.
Sartor, Mrs. Cotnam and Mrs. WelshDevlin and a big thank you to
Mr. Charlton for being a marshal and
Mrs. Humphrey for helping at the
finish line.
Our Intermediate girls
tournament is on Tuesday,
October 11 and our boys
tournament is on Thursday,
October 13. Many thanks to
Mr. Koledin, Ms. Donafeld ,
Ms. Pembleton and Mr.
Sargent for their coaching
and to all parents who have
volunteered to drive.
Lost and Found
All lost and found items this month
will be taken to The Salvation Army
on Friday, October 28. All students
are encouraged to take a look for their
lost items before this date.
Morning Drop-Off
It has come to our attention
that parents have been
dropping off their children in
the staff parking lot “North
end.” To prevent congestion,
we ask that all parents
remember that there is
absolutely No Student DropOff in the north parking lot,
which is reserved for Staff
Only. Thank you for your
cooperation.

Go Green!
Hawks with
Hearts
Our very own social justice club would like
to thank all those who purchased a
cookbook at the Open House. We hope you
enjoy the tasty recipes! Our group will be
participating in the Vow of Silence which
will take place in November. On this day,
our group will be silent all day to help raise
awareness of those children who are slaves,
must work long hours, in poor conditions
and not have the opportunity to have an
education. Stay tuned for more information
about this day. Also, check out the
website: www.freethechildren.com
To help with our recycling and reduce
our waste, we are asking families to
help out our school by sending snacks
and lunches in reusable containers.
This cuts down the waste at St.
Ignatius. This is a positive lesson to
help our children become more aware
of the importance of sorting our
garbage and helping our environment.
In order to cut down our waste we can:
buy in bulk and make/bake items that
can help us cut down on individual
packaging. A reminder that
Wednesdays and Thursdays are
litterless lunch days! Thank you for
your help to make St. Ignatius a Green
School!
Ignatian Prayer to Generosity
Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost;
To persevere, and not to heed the wounds;
To labour, and not to seek rest;
To give of myself and not to ask for
Reward, Except the reward of knowing
That I am doing your will.

Locks of Love
Our very own Gr. 8 student,
Hailey Barker, recently cut 12
inches of her hair to donate to
children. Her hair will now be
made as a wig for those who
have lost their hair due to illness
or chemotherapy. A truly
St. Ignatius trait of giving and
not counting the cost. We are
very proud of you!
