SADDLEBACK COLLEGE HONORS BOARD Academic Senate Standing Committee Purpose: To nurture and govern the Saddleback College Honors Program in its mission to “develop exceptional talent, ability, and scholarship in highly motivated students of all majors.” Meets: Bi-weekly in Fall and Spring. Chair: Honors Program Chair or Co-Chair Members Ex Officio, Voting: Vice President for Instruction Honors Counselor or Counselors, for the academic year(s) active All faculty involved in approved Honors courses, for the semester(s) active Two Honors Program students in Good Standing, elected from the Honors Student Council Any Saddleback faculty member with a history of or interest in teaching in the Honors Program Reporting Responsibilities: Policy: The Honors Board reports to the Academic Senate re: all matters under Title 5, §53200. Operation: The Honors Program is housed under the Office of Instruction, independent of the College’s academic divisions. Recommending Responsibilities: The Board’s jurisdiction covers approval of new Honors courses; establishment of standards for Program admission, good standing, and completion; determination and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes; coordination of Program Review; and deliberation and decision concerning other items necessary to the development of the Program and the success of its students. Decision-Making Process: The Honors Board seeks to reach decisions by consensus, but may make decisions by vote of a simple majority of its members. All members of the Honors Board may vote on all issues, with the reservation that students may not vote on issues regarding other students (e.g., dismissal). The presiding chair will not vote except in the event of a tie. Communication Process: The Board publicizes its activities in reports during meetings of the Academic Senate on pages under http://www.saddleback.edu/honors/, via the Academic Senate committee pages, and by appropriate group e-mail (e.g., Honors students, Honors faculty, all faculty, Campuswide, etc.)
