Optimizing the Volume of a Box Project
Your task:
Redesign seven different rectangular boxes to maximize the
volume of each box and create one of the optimized boxes out
of any material.
What’s required:
 A before and after sketch of each box’s net with the
corners added to make the net a rectangle (including the
dimensions)
 The equation for the maximum volume of each box
 A graph for each box’s equation
 A model of one of the boxes with its maximum volume
 A final summary of your work as well as answers to
questions that will be provided
Plan of action:
Each day you will fill out a daily checklist summarizing your
progress.
Monday: Measure the seven boxes and begin sketching the nets
Tuesday: Build the equations for the volume of each box
Wednesday: Draw graphs of each equation
Thursday: Continue working on graphs and start finding the
maximums of each box
Friday: Finish up all sketches, equations, and graphs
