Oxford School of Hospitality Management
Cluster: The business and management application(s) of hospitality-related practices
and competencies
We invite candidates with a strong academic grounding in social sciences to explore the
applications of hospitality-related practices within “non-hospitality” organisational or business
contexts. For example, this could include studies examining the interactions of hospitality
with retail, events, healthcare or other service sectors (See e.g. Cavell, 2012). Studies could
also consider the relevance of hospitality-related practices, for example workplace eating
and drinking, in organisations (cf. Briner & Sturdy, 2008). We are keen to develop rigorous
multi and inter-disciplinary work that has the potential to make positive impacts on practice.
Candidates are asked to outline in their application the disciplinary context and academic
audience(s) of their project, the prospective contributions to specific fields of enquiry and the
potential impacts of the proposed research beyond academia.
