Expedition Log of the S/V Carlyn Date: OCTOBER 20th, 2015 Trip Day: Day 1 Location: WEST SOUND, ORCAS ISLAND Name(s): JOSHUA V AND EMMA B School/Grade: CATHARINE BLAINE 8TH Afternoon Report From Carlyn to the Web Please share some interesting stories about today… On the way to Anacortes, we travled on a snazzy charter bus, which everyone enjoyed. Some were exhausted, but were energetic once they got off and began to get things organized. No obstacles were ran into, and everything ran smoothly. Any favorite wildlife sightings, quotes, games to share? While sailing today in early afternoon, we (Carlyn students) spotted many moon jellies over the course of a few hours. Moon jellies were a constant sighting until we docked for the evening. After we put covers over the sails, we began our tasks, one of the crew found a Spotted Nudibranch, a unusual sight given the circumstance. It was very exciting for us to get an up close look at such an amazing underwater creature. Describe the anchorage or moorage where Carlyn is right now: The Carlyn has stopped now at Camp Four Winds Mooring Ball. The mooring is located in West Sound, Orcas Island. Today’s weather… While boarding the Carlyn this morning, the skies were mostly sunny, but the cool temperature still called for a warm coat. Moving into the afternoon, it became mostly cloudy to full sun. Describe highlights from today’s science and sailing watches: We were eager and excited to learn about sails (how to put them up, and the different parts), new knots, all the components of the Carlyn. We also conducted a data collection of zooplankton. We worked together to complete our work and finished with minimal problems. Any questions, concerns, or expectations for tomorrow? We expect to work more on science experiments and have more fun together.
