Some of1our Page of 5engineering challenges include Rock not Roll, Golf Tower, Marshmallow tower, Elevating Animals, and many more! = _____ tens and _____ ones = _____ Next Step- Using these place values to add and subtract! Page 2 of 5 SCIENCE- CON’T As we reach the Winter months- we will begin our Unit 3- A Sticky Situation. This unit focuses on the engineering design process by investigating the process in which to build something to solve a problem. This “ROCK WALL” unit is a MESSY one! We will have many materials and be working through some challenging tasks. I will definitely use my Volunteers during this unit in the hopes that they will be able to help organize materials and keep our room “somewhat clean”. THE WEATHER IS CHANGING! WORD OF THE WEEK We will have many problem solving situations where we are comparing items such as: How many more? How many fewer? We will begin to focus on the compare BAR MODELS These will allow us to represent and use the information to compare just like we see on a graph. Here’s a sample problem: Theodore has 4 more apples than his sister Meg. Meg has 8 apples. How many apples does Theodore have? Model: Humanities Theodore Quarter 2 =? Meg 4 more Reading,8 Writing, and Social Studies This model shows Theodore with a longer bar (he has more. Meg has a shorter bar with 8 (but Theo’s bar is 4 more.. so we show how they are equal. That means we add 8 + 4 = 12. Theo has 12 apples. Math – MONEY- MONEY! Finally this unit will introduce and begin to utilize money. Students are expected to identify, count, add and subtract money as mixed coins and dollars. You can be a huge help! Start using coins! Practice SKIP COUNTING! Practice naming, counting values, and trading coins for the same value! Try this one: I have 5 coins, together they equal 55¢. What coins could I have? Page 4 of 5 Reading We have been learning so many new things so far this year. Our Reading, Writing, and Social Studies topics this quarter include: comparing and contrasting characters and similar stories, identifying text features and their purposes in non-fiction texts, distinguishing the difference between fantasy and realism, determining cause and effect, and making inferences using text evidence. You can help your child at home by listening to them read and reading to them, and asking them questions related to the above topics. Writing This year we have plenty of growing to do. Your child is expected to progress from writing simple sentences to writing detailed paragraphs with a topic sentences, 3 or more relevant details, and a concluding sentence. This term we will focus on writing detailed paragraphs with a topic sentence, three or more detail sentences, and a closing sentence while writing a personal narrative paragraph, and writing an opinion/argument paragraph. You can help your child at home by correcting sentences and paragraphs that they write at home and share with you. FUNdations FUNdations is the phonics program used in Carroll County Public Schools. This term, we will focus on reading and spelling words with digraphs, blends, digraph-blends, bonus letters, glued sounds, vowel teams, multiple syllables, silent e, r-controlled vowels, and suffixes, and prefixes. All of these terms will be explained in the parent letters sent home on the yellow FUNdations sheet for homework. Please take note that most times, the homework is printed for more than one week. Please do not throw away the yellow sheets until all weeks are complete. Vocabulary This year our school is focusing on helping students to learn how to use context clues to figure out the meanings of unknown words. Homework will be sent home for additional practice during the week. Please help your child by asking them for the evidence they used to help them select their answer. Humanities- Mrs. Norwood Social Studies We had so much fun learning about U.S Symbols and Community Helpers. Our field trip was a success! Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped chaperone our trip. We couldn’t have done it without you! Page 5 of 5
