Materials: Numbered Posters for Four Corners game; “Bein’ With You This Way” by W.
Nikola-Lisa, Harcourt Publishing, Hong Kong, 1999; Guess Who Fact Sheet (attached);
School Counseling Core Curriculum pretest (attached)
Procedures:
*Prior to lesson, administer Grade 2 School Counseling Core Curriculum pretest to second
grade classes
*Play Four Corner game asking diversity questions about hair color, hair shape, favorite
food, favorite ice cream, skin color, siblings, languages spoken, country of birth, eye color.
*Ask students “Which is better” as they travel to different corners. Should people be treated
differently because of the corner to which they travel?
*Ask for definitions of “diversity”. Remind students about the wonderful diversity that exists in
their world. Ask if anyone has experienced being treated differently? How did that feel?
*Read and process “Bein’ With You This Way”.
*Ask students how we might be able to learn new things about our friends. Distribute “Guess
Who” student activity page. Students should write down 2 little known facts about themselves
secretly. After collecting these pages, counselor will read the two facts and give the class 3
chances to guess who the person is. Do as many as time allows.
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: Collect the number of students attending this lesson
Perception Data: Prior to this lesson, administer School Counseling Core Curriculum pretest
to second grade students.
Outcome Data: Prior to this lesson, collect discipline data on the number of office referrals
for aggressive behaviors, and the number of teacher-mediated disputes in grade 2.
Follow Up: At the conclusion of the final lesson in the School Counseling Core Curriculum
Action Plan, collect posttest perception and discipline outcome data. Collaborate with other
counselors on the effectiveness of the action plan in achieving the counseling program goals.
Finally, prepare the results report for presentation to the Counselor Advisory Council.
Guess Who?
Directions: Write 2 facts that no one else knows about you. Maybe you like a certain food no
one else seems to eat? Maybe your parents are from another country? Maybe you have a
secret talent? Keep this a secret until we’re back together as a group!
