PROJECT IDEA The Project Idea Form is a public document, if you wish to keep it private at between the JS and your partnership at this stage, please advise your Facilitator / Project Name / Realising the Well-being of Coastal Communities through Responsible Tourism and Small-Scale Fisheries) Contact / Name / Organisation / Address / Telephone number / E-mail / at05@gre.ac.uk Specific Objective / Keep only one and erase the others/ 3.1 - Realise the potential of the common natural and cultural assets to deliver innovative and sustainable growth Summary description of the project idea (1 page max.) / Small-scale fishing (SSF) fleets, distributed throughout many coastal towns in the Channel Programme area contribute to a distinctive sense of place. However, the potential of SSF to deliver social, economic and community wellbeing is under exploited in urban planning, tourism development and fisheries management. This The Interreg VA France (Channel) England Programme is financed by European Regional Development Funds/ situation has been created owing to a lack of synergy between different areas of policy making and undervaluing the importance of SSF. Despite moves towards approaches based around integrated coastal zone management and ecosystem services there is still a knowledge gap about how to understand the potential benefits that SSF can bring to coastal localities. This is problematic, as the presence of a strong, vibrant fishing community can contribute to sustainable community development and stimulate opportunities for economic growth and regeneration. The aim of this project is therefore: To stimulate sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) in coastal towns by creating a responsible tourism Channel Fisheries Way (CFW) underpinned by a model of fisheries towns in transition to allow transfer of best practise to other coastal towns both in the EU and beyond Examples of concrete actions / Creation of a responsible tourism based CFW and associated brand Development of case study areas and initiatives along the CFW to deliver community owned grassroots economic and community development as examples of best practise Produce a transferable conceptual model (drawing on ecosystem services, sense of place, governance and wellbeing) that explains fisheries towns in transition to be used by policy and decision makers Changes that the project will contribute to / Creation of the Channel Fisheries Way New market opportunities Increased social value placed on the importance of SSF as part of our cultural heritage New ‘coastal community’ learning hubs created, either virtually or real Understanding of relationship between SSF and responsible tourism for economic and community development New models for assessing and understanding the importance of SSF for community regeneration Case study areas with increased economic revenue and sustainable development Model for planners and decision makers The Interreg VA France (Channel) England Programme is financed by European Regional Development Funds/ Cross border added value / The Channel maritime area is a shared resource connecting France and England. Maximising its potential for the blue economy requires a co-operative effort. RENEW-COAST will develop the CFW based on shared natural and cultural heritage of SSF along both sides of the Channel. This shared heritage is a unique selling point of the CFW that will enhance its attractiveness and stimulate blue growth in England and France. It is essential that the all partners share knowledge / experiences to allow co-operative grassroots initiatives. RENEW-COAST an example of the added value that can be achieved through cross-border collaboration. The creation of a CFW will demonstrate the benefits of taking a cross-border approach to blue growth. It will deliver new opportunities for fisheries communities by creating a new cross-border identity that taps into an international tourism market. Capitalisation on previous initiatives/ RENEW-COAST builds on 4 existing EU projects. It draws upon GIFS and TOURFISH INTERREG IVA 2 Seas projects. GIFS and TourFish underpins both an understanding of the demand for SSF based tourism and approaches to achieve new opportunities for coastal communities. RENEW-COAST draws on the work of CAMIS and contributes directly to the aims of CAMIS to promote sustainable coastal communities in the Channel region. RENEW-COAST will also draw on the experience in ICT and tourism of the COOL Tourism project. Sustainability/ • Ensuring CFW and conceptual model become a template for international SSF. UoG will lead work to secure further rounds of funding. In particular aligning the project with the Atlantic Arc and the proposed Fishing Village Network (FARNET). International collaborations developed in China (through UOG China Maritime Centre) and America (links to the Great Lake Fisheries Heritage Trail). European collaboration for example with Lea artibai Transnational Touristic offer, Mar Galaica etc. An international context will be provided with links to the Too Big to Ignore project (TBTI). • Through marketing opportunities and business innovation workshops RENEWCOAST will contribute to the support of self-sustaining business enterprises • Creation of the CFW brand label and marketing website which will continue to exist after the project. • During the project explore ways for the CFW to become a not for profit charity. RENEW-COAST will work with local stakeholders (e.g. Sussex, Devon, Brittany) to create local coastal information centres. These centres (virtual and real) will The Interreg VA France (Channel) England Programme is financed by European Regional Development Funds/ be self-governing local bodies existing beyond the duration of the project.
