We are open to a job sharing arrangement on a pro-rata basis Contract Type: initially this is offered as a 12 month fixed term contract with the opportunity to renew a contract subject to ongoing financial stability. Hours: 30 hours per week including regular evenings and some weekend work. Reporting to: Trustee Board via Chair of trustees Job Summary Responsible for shift planning rota, check of protocol returns and safe guarding requirements Assist the night shelter manager in recruitment and training of shelter volunteers Co-ordinate and disseminate information regarding day time activities and opportunities under the guidance and direction of the night shelter manager. Assist Management of the day-to-day operational activity of a 10 -14 bed night shelter fully staffed by volunteers, under the direction and guidance of the Night Shelter Manager. In particular, this involves covering some of the Night Shelter Manager’s duties at weekends and during planned or unplanned absences. To be on call duty for certain periods in the week Support the Night Shelter Manager in maintaining an appropriate level of behaviour in the Shelter, but not to undertake disciplinary action or consequence management unless mutually agreed. Support the Manager in Guest Admission decisions, Housing Benefit administration and other specialist activities as required, but not be accountable for those decisions or activities. Support the organisation, development and motivation of a wide team of volunteers Act as an advocate for the wider Joel Community Trust work, engaging with partners across the voluntary, public and private sectors. Key Duties Management of the night shelter. Organise and maintain rotas for volunteers, liaising with volunteer shift leaders and individual volunteers Ensure policies and procedures are followed and recommend improvements. Reguarly attend the start and end of sessions (including some weekends) to ensure standards are maintained, support volunteers and, in particular, grow and maintain warm, supportive relationships with guests. Volunteers Maintain an ongoing programme of recruitment, training and retention for volunteers Organise and run appropriate vetting and training for volunteers. Manage a hub through the use of volunteer and statutory groups to offer creative opportunities for guests and past guests Guest Relationships Create a safe and secure culture and environment for guests (and volunteers). Encourage guests to take advantage of the physical, emotional and spiritual support that is available from partner organisations including St Peter’s Church. Ensure that guests stay connected with their referring body, normally Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness (KCAH) This is not a definitive list of tasks - it is designed to give an overall view of the job. Joel Community Trust, registered Charity No. 253030 Page 2 Person Specification Knowledge, skills and experience Excellent organisational skills, able to work under pressure, to prioritise and meet deadlines Strong understanding of homelessness issues as they affect individuals Skill and experience working with people who are disaffected and excluded from society Successful experience in engaging and managing volunteers Strong stakeholder management skills (communication, negotiation) Previous experience working with homeless people or other relevant disadvantaged groups, possibly in a residential environment will be an advantage Personal attributes Empathy with the needs of homeless people and a desire to make a difference in individual lives Strong assertiveness and ability to deal with challenging situations High levels of self-motivation and confidence, using initiative appropriately Committed non-judgemental approach to the guests and of the various faith groups Engaging, dynamic and confident with volunteers and external stakeholders Commitment to equality and diversity and the Joel holistic approach to caring for the Night Shelter guests The applicant should be sympathetic to the values of the Christian faith.
