10. HAUSAUFGABE (HOMEWORK) (Math is on the second file) 10/22/2015 Dear Parents, thanks for signing up for the conferences! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4fa9a62ea7f94-gva This week started beautifully again – with nice weather and time outdoors. The rain forced us to have indoor picnics and gym-recesses. Math: We continued working on skip counting did some testing and concluded chapters. German: We worked more insistently on spelling and completed the body parts test. Science: We had fun completing further experiments on gravity – with control and evaluation. Gravity in the universe (inter-planetary approach) will be next. Music: As usual, the students learned with the CSCC. PE: The children worked on their fitness in the gym with the PE teacher. They also got graded. On Tuesday the students learned from our school nurse about the importance of washing hands, especially during this cold season. On Wednesday Kaiser Permanente offered an entertaining and informative one-hour play on healthy habits. The children had a great time watching. I’d like to encourage you to help your kids to turn in all their homework. I still have three students who did NEVER turn in ANY homework this trimester. Please catch up by Tuesday – it matters. We have been writing many tests these two weeks – as usually at the end of a trimester. In case your kid has been absent, he/she might need to catch up next week. Have him/her well rested and prepared to study Monday/Tuesday nights. On Monday we will be going on our field trip (serious lunch needed!). I hope that all the parents signed up. Your child can have school lunch only if you signed him/her up for it by Tuesday morning. We are looking forward to all the children having a great time. Our advanced thanks to the chaperones! We just need to remind them that we CAN’T provide transport nor entry tickets for more persons than our students this year. On November 11th we will celebrate St. Martin’s Day with a lantern walk and sweets. We will craft the lanterns on November 9th. Please see, complete and return the attached flyer. Have a beautiful weekend and a great week, Häufigkeitswortschatz–Kurzwörter & A- und E-Wörter (frequents short words) & a- and e-words aber als also auf aus bei da das der des dir dich die doch du durch er es für her hinter ich im in ist ja mit nach nein nicht nun oder schon sie sind so über um und was weil weiter wer wir wo A Abend, Abende acht alle, alles alt, älter Ampel antworten Apfel, Äpfel April arbeiten Arm Ast, Äste Aufgabe Auge AugustAuto E Ei, Eier eins elf die Elf Eltern Ende eng Ente Erde essen, isst Eule Euro NOTE TO THE PARENTS: You can start making vocabulary cards at home by printing out these forms from your e-mail attachment. Kids like to spell and (self-) control their spelling, and the practice will help them a long way. The hard copy of this homework will only show a word list that contains the same words – you can use that to study, in case you can’t print anything out. Please keep your kids writing!!! Have your children write at least 10 words/one paragraph each day (journal, letters, ideas/phantasy stories, wish lists) – either in English or in German. Encourage them to write orderly and praise them. Love/passion for both, reading AND writing, will make school much easier/enjoyable for them. Mental Math is going to be a major subject for the next few years. Thus, please, use any possibility to skip count with your children: first graders should be proficient with at least 2s and 5s up to 100. By the end of the year, second graders should be able to count from 2s to 12s up to 144 and more, and know about the place values of ones and tens (and hundreds). Please, practice simple addition and subtraction (second graders might want to practice multiplication/the times table). For Science please have them work with scales – probably mainly in the kitchen – and to estimate weight. We will focus more on measuring gravity – that’s why awareness for inertia, traction, acceleration and physical forces in general would be of interest. Age appropriate science shows online and on TV might reinforce their interest. Just don’t let them have too much screen time. I hope that you can enjoy their singing. Singing in German reinforces their confidence, motivation and language skills. Most kids in class love dancing: have fun! That said, you don’t need to return any homework for week 10. Repeated thanks for sending your children to my class every day. I did enjoy all of them for this trimester, and I hope that they had some fun learning. We focused on creating a motivational basis for more assessment-driven work for the rest of this school year. I would love more communication with the parents: my suggestion would be an parents-teacher meeting once a month on Mondays after school – parents wouldn’t need to come in extra for it. Minutes could be drafted and send to the working parents who won’t be able to attend. Please let me know your take on this. In the new semester I will have a website presence with links, homework and current information. You will be able to use online references any time at home. According to lore, he was a modest and altruistic man. The legend of how he saved a homeless person from freezing to death by giving him half of his cloak is known to children in all parts of Germany. Many children build their own lanterns in the runup to November 11. On the evening of St. Martinʼs Day, there are lantern processions (Martinsumzüge or Laternenumzüge) in towns and cities all over Germany. They are often led by an actor impersonating the Saint, who is usually dressed up as a Roman soldier riding on a horse. Please join us in our GVA Lantern Walk Date of the lantern walk: Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. (We will meet at the main entrance of GVA.) Dress in warm clothes! After the lantern walk, we will have cookies and something warm to drink. Parents can either make their own lanterns at home or make one at the craft day at the school cafeteria. Parents who would like to make a lantern at the school will need to purchase a lantern kit, which costs $7 and has everything you will need to make one lantern. (Includes lantern rod, light, and craft materials). Cash only please!!! Parents are invited to make their own lanterns at the school: Monday, November 9, 2015, 1:00– 3:15 p.m. Please check how many lanterns you would like to purchase, sign the slip and return it to the school by Monday, November 2, 2015. ------------------------------------------------------ Please turn this portion into the PTO Lock Box across the hall from the office. o Yes, I would like to join the lantern walk and make a lantern at the school. The amount of $______ is included for ____ lantern kit(s).
