Discussion:
Public Relations materials and challenges
After a look at the new web page for transfer s there was a discussion of other PR challenges for Liberal
Studies. A new LS student outreach committee has been formed and they will be launching several
projects and helping with open houses.
Faculty members assisting with open houses are
April 3 – tables, Joanna Baker, and academic presentation, David Locascio
April 9 – tables and academic presentation, Nancy Powers
Transfer students, advisors and advising issues
Transfer students remain a concern of LS. A small group of advisors has been responsible for advising
transfer students during the current academic year and this has been working pretty well. This will
continue next year with the addition of one new transfer advisor, for a total of eight. Registration and
documentation of credit issues for transfers remain to be resolved.
Action Items:
Various informal amendments were offered to a Partnership agreement document, authored by Susan
McGowan, that is an agreement to be signed by each student at the beginning of the partnership that
states expectation and possible outcomes in case of an unsuccessful completion of the Partnership. Nancy
Powers moved that the Liberal Studies programs that include Partnerships implement the document
beginning in fall 2011. David Locascio seconded the motion and it passed. The approved document is
attached.
Peggy Tarpley moved that we adopt the following statement for the catalog:
At the beginning of the Partnership semester each student will enter an agreement to meet
certain responsibilities beyond the scope of the individual courses. If a student is not able to
meet the Partnership responsibilities, she/he will have alternative opportunities.
Maria Timmerman seconded the motion. David Locascio offered an amendment to add “as per the
agreement” at the end of the statement. Nancy Powers seconded the amendment and it passed. The
original motion passed as amended:
At the beginning of the Partnership semester each student will enter an agreement to meet
certain responsibilities beyond the scope of the individual courses. If a student is not able to
meet the Partnership responsibilities, she/he will have alternative opportunities as per the
agreement.
NOTE: Through an e-mail meeting conducted after EPC concerns were expressed, the committee
approved the revised Partnership statement as attached:

Partnership Semester
The Partnership in the Elementary and Middle-School programs includes both a classroom
placement (internship) and the following courses.
___ EDUC 440 Field Experience in Literary Instruction (1 credits)
___ EDUC 441 Elementary School Literacy Instruction (3 credits) or EDUC 442 Middle
School Literacy Instruction (3 credits)
___ EDUC 450 Principles of Instruction (2 credits)
___ EDUC 451 Curriculum in the Elementary School (NK‐6) (2 credits) or EDUC 452
Curriculum in the Middle School (2 credits)
___ EDUC 487 Classroom Management and System Issues (3 credits)
___ SPED 489 Survey of Exceptional Children (3 credits)
The materials and guidelines describing the requirements for successful classroom placement are
distributed and discussed at the Partnership orientation meeting. During the classroom placement
experience students will receive regular feedback from the two Partnership supervisors and from the
host teacher providing opportunities and encouragement for growth and improvement.
The classroom placement is integral to developing the attitudes, skills, and dispositions of classroom
professionals. Successful completion of the classroom placement and the courses listed above will
result in two positive recommendations for student teaching placement.
A student not performing at an acceptable level in the classroom placement portion of the
Partnership by the end of the sixth week of the semester will be removed from the Partnership
placement. He/she will alter the course of study for the semester as follows:
 Discontinue the Partnership placement
 Withdraw from EDUC 440 and EDUC 450 (These courses can be completed only in
conjunction with the Partnership placement. Withdrawal must be completed by the 35 th day
of classes.)
 Complete EDUC 441 or 442; EDUC 451or 452; EDUC 487 and SPED 489;
 Meet with the Director of Liberal Studies to choose a different academic direction.
I have read the Partnership materials and understand that the Partnership semester includes both
the successful participation in the assigned classroom as well as completion of the courses.
