St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin May 30th & 31st, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully The Most Holy Trinity PROCESSION AND PERICHORESIS Neither the term nor the concept “Trinity” appears in the New Testament. Our scriptures do name all three persons and describe some sort of unity of relationship among them, but it remained for following centuries to wrestle with this self-revelation of God. The term “Trinity” appeared about two hundred years into Christianity’s existence, as it began to gain a hold and there was more time to reflect (and agree or disagree) upon a more precise understanding. One way the church began to understand the relationship of the persons of the Trinity was through the term “procession.” The three persons of the Trinity live in mutual indwelling with each other, and are revealed to people this way. Thus the Son became known through the procession called “filiation” and the Spirit through the procession called “spiration.” Another way the Trinity was understood was through perichoresis (the “chor” of our “choreography” is in there), in which the three eternal persons of the Trinity dance together in their divine and holy unity. DANCING AND DWELLING So what? It is easy to ask this question about obscure theological debates that took place centuries ago. But these definitions were born of the struggles of the faithful to understand how the Trinity lived and worked in their lives, and the fruit of their efforts can benefit us today. Each of us was baptized in the name of and into the Holy Trinity. At that time, the Trinity came to dwell in us, and we began to dwell in the Trinity. At the beginning of the twentieth century, St. Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity (d. 1906) went even further and prayed for the Trinity to be buried in her, that she might be buried in the Trinity. Our relationship with the Trinity, then, can be as deep and profound as our humanity will allow. And, just as their manifestation or revelation is how we know them, it is when the grace and life of the Trinity are made known through our witness that others see their holiness proceed into the world. It is when we reflect and share the joyous dance of the three persons that their mystery is once again revealed for the life of others. We open ourselves to this mystery every time we sign ourselves with the cross. I keep speaking of "mystery" because that is what God is. Our knowledge of God comes in bits and pieces. Our mind cannot comprehend the totality of God. God has revealed Himself in sacred Scripture in ways we humans can grasp, using images we can understand or relate to. Sometimes these images may seem to contradict others and yet we still don't know the reality of God. This isn't a mystery that we can solve for the more we understand, the more 'questions' arise. We can only understand this mystery as it relates to us in our daily experiences. The more I think I know, the more I hunger for more and more. May the 'Mystery' we celebrate aid us in coming to that greater knowledge here until we enter into it fully in heaven. Vacation time challenges us to maintain our growth in the Love of God and our neighbor. There are many ways to find out where and when the celebration of Mass will take place wherever we may travel so today travel is not a valid excuse for not going. Be true, be fully Catholic, go to Mass and receive the Eternal Gift of the mystery of God. God bless, be safe and keep up the 'good' work wherever you may be. Fr. Tully St. Michael Pastoral Council Meeting-June 3rd at 6:45. Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Weekend of May 30/31, 2015 In today’s Gospel and reading from the letter of St. Paul we hear of the gift of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In our devotional life we make the sign of the cross and recite the “Glory Be” as an expression of our faith as a Trinitarian people. But what does it mean for Christian stewards to accept in a practical way the experience of God in this three-fold gift? Is it a call to share our own life in community, with compassion and love, and to work for healing, justice, peace and unity? Is it an invitation to invite others into fellowship with us in the unity of the Father, Son and Spirit? ST.
