We house the world’s most important and extensive collection of cultural and research material, and we promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and culture through access to our collections and including publishing through Aboriginal Studies Press. We engage in a broad research program, covering areas of social and cultural wellbeing, country and governance, and including the Native title Research Unit. AIATSIS works to enhance the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to enable a better understanding of Australia and its people by all Australians. According to recent significance assessments the AIATSIS collection is the “most extensive and best contextualised collection of Indigenous Australia in the world”. As a major national keeping place for Indigenous knowledge, it is also key research infrastructure and a source of information and knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories for Australia and the world. The Collections program encompasses all aspects of collection development, management, preservation and access. Position Details The Family History Unit at AIATSIS is involved in the provision of Indigenous family history research and training, including for Link Up services around Australia. The training program includes the Cert IV in Stolen Generations Family History Research and Case Management and non-accredited training. The Manager of the Unit will: manage and support the team to deliver the Unit’s work program; ensure strong links between the Unit and other parts of the Institute; develop relationships with significant external stakeholders including Link Ups; and manage the training program and family history outreach. Duty Statement Under broad direction Manage and support the team to maintain their social and emotional wellbeing while delivering the Unit’s work program, which will include being exposed to traumatic information Ensure strong links between the Unit and other parts of the Institute Work closely with the network of Link-Up services around Australia Manage the Unit’s training program, including the Cert IV in Stolen Generations Family History Research and Case Management and non-accredited training in Indigenous family history research Deliver training and on the job learning, including in relation to Indigenous family history Manage the Indigenous family history research and indexing panel of contractors, ensuring high-quality output Coordinate a genealogists mentoring program Undertake family history outreach such as drafting and updating on-line and other materials, including through the family history website, newsletters and other media Represent AIATSIS at a range of external forums and develop relationships with significant external stakeholders Ensure that the Unit meets all of its service delivery, compliance and reporting responsibilities, including to funders Be aware of, and work to the capability clusters outlined in the Australian Public Service Commission Integrated Leadership System applicable to Executive Level 1 employees. Demonstrated understanding of the impact of colonisation and forced removals on Indigenous social and emotional well-being. 3. Demonstrated understanding of the role of a major specialist collection in meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and researchers, and the particular demands of such a collection including understanding of the challenges posed by Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights and the concerns of Indigenous peoples when facilitating discoverability of material which contains Indigenous cultural heritage. 4.
