Computer Applications/Literacy Syllabus
1. NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION: Mrs. Valerie Reed 385-5461 vreed@kingcity.k12.ca.
2. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:
A. Demonstrate ability to touch-type all letters, numbers, and punctuation marks. Touch-typing is
defined as typing the correct letters with the correct fingers without looking at the keyboard.
Goal is 35 nwam (net words a minute).
B. Exhibit basic computer literacy knowledge, i.e. hardware/software components, features, and
capabilities.
C. Improve proficiency in Language Arts Standards and communication skills.
D. Master beginning features in MSWord and PowerPoint.
E. Demonstrate the ability to properly and professionally use the internet and E-mail.
F. Create a portfolio documenting computing skills and examples of all documents produced. This
will allow students to produce similar documents in the future.
3. COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introductory course designed to teach mastery of the computer keyboard
and basic computer literacy. In addition to building basic typing accuracy and speed, students will
learn personal and business communications, beginning MSWord, beginning PowerPoint, beginning
Internet, and E-mail, as well as complete a portfolio. Basic grammar and proofreading skills will be
practiced to reinforce the English Language Arts standards. Meets KCJUHSD graduation
requirement for computer literacy.
4. CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT:
A. The student will adhere to all school rules and district policies as summarized in the Parent
handbook
B. Do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it. If not sure, ask!
GRADING SCALE: Administrative Regulation (AR) 5121 (a)
Grades for each grading period as follows:

An Incomplete shall be given only when a student’s work is not finished because of illness or
other excused absence. If not made up within six weeks, the Incomplete shall become an F.
5. ASSESSMENTS/ASSIGNMENTS: Course Outline:
A. Touch-typing using MicroType5 and Micro Pace Pro software.
B. Computer hardware and software components, features, and capabilities
C. Language Arts proficiency using MicroType5 software.
D. MSWord beginning features: memos, letters, and reports.
E. PowerPoint beginning features: slide composition and arrangement.
F. Internet terminology and proper e-mail usage.
G. Portfolio creation of computing skills and example documents.
6. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES:
A. Missing work will be accepted prior to Finals Week each semester.
B. Plagiarism and cheating will result in a grade of zero (0).

7. CLASS EXPECTATIONS – LEVEL OF RIGOR: Most students will be able to keep up with class
assignments if they work from bell to bell each day in class. Students can catch up on assignments if
they get behind in the Library Lab before school, at lunch, and after school.
