TPF's seed drawers (which date back to Mr. Payne's first enterprise, opened in 1903 in downtown Los Angeles!) are always fun to explore -- and growing native plants from seed is a wonderful experience for gardeners of all ages! Our fabulous selection of native plant seed includes hundreds of species of annuals and perennials, and Fall is the optimum time for sowing! We stock dozens of different spring wildlfowers -- choices for sun or shade, containers or large expanses. Look for dependable Eschscholzia californica (California poppy, in classic golden yellow and other shades); Gilia species, including bird's eye gilia, pictured here; and Clarkia species (late bloomers collectively known as farewell-tospring). We also carry seed for native and drought-tolerant grasses and grass-like plants. Growing instructions and help with selection are available during the Fall Plant Sale (and year round!). Seed can also be purchased through our e-store. Pictured: Easy-to-grow Gilia tricolor, Bird's Eye Gilia. Photo courtesy of Ken Gilliland. IT'S BULB-PLANTING TIME, TOO! Embellish your garden with California native bulbs. You'll find a large and diverse selection of these native treasures in the TPF store in Sun Valley, as well as through our e-store. Plant your bulbs as soon as possible after purchase -- you'll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful flowers on the planet! Pick up a free copy of our new guide to growing California native bulbs, available now in the TPF store. Pictured: Triteleia ixioides 'Starlight'. Photo courtesy of Ken Gilliland. WILDFLOWERING L.A. Wildflowering L.A. is a native wildflower seed planting initiative throughout Los Angeles County, beginning in October 2013 by artist Fritz Haeg. TPF is delighted to be part of this project! Wildflowering L.A. brings a wild and beautiful seasonal native landscape to open plots of land throughout Los Angeles County. Fifty sites are selected from an open call, based on public visibility and distribution across the county. Owners of selected sites are given free native wildflower seed mixes at workshops in partnership with The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers & Native Plants. Soil preparation, seeding, and wildflower tending are demonstrated at each workshop, and one of four custom wildflower seed mixes is prescribed - Coastal, Flatlands, Hillside, and Roadside - as inspired by Reyner Banham's 1971 book, Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies. Each of the participating sites is officially identified with a prominent carved wood sign. The project culminates with an exhibition in Spring 2014. If you are interested in participating: - You should have ownership of an open plot of land (or permission from the owner to plant) that is sunny and completely visible from a public street. - Seeds are provided for areas from 500 to 2000 square feet. - A 4' x 5' wood sign is installed on each site by the project team after the seeds are planted by the owners in November. - Each site will be identified on a published map and photographed before and after for the Spring exhibition. - Please e-mail a photo of the site, taken from the street or public viewing spot, along with the complete address for consideration to: wildfloweringla@nomadicdivision.org.
