Introduction to College Math Classroom and Homework Policy Teacher: Mrs. Lisa Whiting e-mail: lwhiting@pvipanther.net http://teacherweb.com/VA/PaulVIHighSchool/MrsWhiting Welcome to Intro to College Math! I am looking forward to working with each of you to make this a very successful class. Text: Algebra and Trigonometry for College Readiness with MathXL; Lial; Pearson, 2016. Course Objectives: To provide a concentrated review of previously learned math concepts and to introduce topics not covered in a Basic Algebra 2 course. This course will include an introduction to trigonometry. It will also review basic algebra concepts, matrices, functions and roots. The focus will be on problem solving and preparing students for higher level math. Class Structure: 1. Prayer 2. Warm up/ check HW/take questions 3. New Lesson with examples and practice 4. Final questions/close Grading: Tests 60% Quizzes 30% Homework/Participation 10% There will be at least one test given for every unit studied and quizzes will be given at least once a week. Class Policies: 1. Appropriate behavior is expected in the classroom at all times. This includes respect for God, the school, faculty, staff and classmates. Inappropriate behavior will receive a detention. 2. Students are expected to be on time and prepared for all classes. Being prepared means coming to every class with the following material: computer notebook, textbook, pencils (more than 1) and erasers, red pen, graphing calculator folder for graded work 3. Notes should be saved on the laptop and will be checked at least once a quarter. This will be a participation grade. All graded work for the semester should be kept in the folder to use for studying for the midterm or final. 4. Math is not a spectator sport! In order to master concepts taught in this class practice is required. Homework is assigned almost every night including weekends. Students should attempt every problem, and check those with answers (in the back of the book) as they go. Time will be given in the next class to go over any questions from the previous night's homework. Introduction to College Math Classroom and Homework Policy 5. All math work is to be done in pencil (or on the computer) and all work must be shown. If work is not shown or it is done in pen a zero (0) will be given for that work. 6. Any work missed because of an excused absence must be made up within a reasonable amount of time (see handbook for specifics). It is your responsibility to find out if any assignments were missed and turn them in. I will not come looking for you to make up the work. Work will receive a 0 if not made up. Late work will not be accepted unless there is an excused absence. 7. If a student missed a test/quiz, he/she would have to make arrangements with me for a day and time to make this up (needs to be in some type of written form) with the stipulation that if the test/quiz was not made up on the agreed time, 10% of the total % value of the test/quiz would be taken off for each missed time. This includes, but not limited to, if the agreed upon time was before school but the student missed this time without notifying the teacher, but took the test/quiz later in the day, the 10% would be deducted. Each time missed, another 10% taken off. 8. No cell phones are allowed in class. Calculators will be used in some of the units studied, but not for everything. You should have one with you every day. 9. Extra help is available most days after school. Please let me know in advance that you are coming in so that I can make sure I don't have any conflicts. Paul VI Honor Code: Please read the Paul VI Academic Honor Code, as stated in the Student Handbook, and the Academic Honesty Policy. The Honor Code Pledge, “I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.” will be written on each test and quiz and signed by the student. Any student refusing to sign the pledge will receive a grade of zero (0) for that test or quiz. Intro I have read and understand the course objectives and class policies stated throughout this outline. I hereby agree to abide by them. Student Signature: Parent/Guardian Signature: Date: Date:
