ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPEN POSITION IN ARIZONA POSITION: Arizona Marketing and Communications Director REPORTS TO: Arizona Executive Director LOCATION: Phoenix, Arizona POSITION AVAILABLE: Immediately (start date flexible) SPECIAL NOTE: Spanish fluency preferred Stand for Children – a bold independent voice for public education reform – seeks an exceptional individual with expertise in public awareness campaigns to develop and manage a creative and comprehensive communications strategy within Arizona. THE ORGANIZATIONS Stand for Children is a powerful voice for students. Our mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, graduate from high school prepared for, and with access to, a college education. To date, Stand for Children’s eleven state affiliates (AZ, CO, IL, IN, LA, MA, OK, OR, TN, TX, and WA) have impacted the lives of millions of children through their state and district level work. The Stand for Children family consists of two separate organizations—Stand for Children, a grassroots membership lobby for children exempt under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code, and Stand for Children Leadership Center, a leadership development organization exempt under section 501(c)(3). Stand for Children and the Stand for Children Leadership Center work together to: Educate and empower parents, teachers, and community members to demand excellent schools; and Advocate for effective local and state education policies and investments and ensure that those policies impact classrooms and students. Separately, Stand for Children works to elect courageous leaders who will stand up for our priorities. We stand for achievement by all students, through quality early childhood education, effective, empowered and supported teachers and principals, engaged families with high expectations, and other strategies that provide students the tailored instruction and support they need to graduate high school ready for college. We stand for access to high quality schools for all students, especially students in poverty, students of color, and students learning English. To expand access to all students, we advocate for effective educational leadership at all levels, sufficient and effectively spent school funding, and clear, accurate information about how schools are performing for parents, educators, and the community. THE POSITION Stand for Children seeks an Arizona Marketing and Communications Director to oversee local communications and marketing efforts to elevate and promote our advocacy campaigns and community engagement work in Phoenix. This position is to ensure all communications are compelling, effective, and representative of the organization’s values and mission to improve public education. The Marketing and Communications Director will serve a crucial role in building the profile of Stand for Children as a leading political voice in education reform and to motivate thousands of parents, educators, and concerned community leaders to get involved. The Marketing and Communications Director will leverage his/her expertise in communications strategy to ensure that we continue to grow our brand recognition and increase our campaign prowess. S/he will be a strategist with robust knowledge of how to craft an effective message which will resonate with the intended target audiences. The Marketing and Communications Director position represents a unique opportunity to work as part of a dynamic, highly effective, and rapidly growing national organization. In addition to strengthening Stand for Children’s current communications practices, the Marketing and Communications Director will work specifically with Arizona staff to test innovative new communications tools and messages. The Marketing and Communications Director will also have the opportunity to work with the national staff, specifically the National Marketing and Communications Director and members of Stand for Children’s national Marketing and Communications and Development teams. This position reports to the Arizona Executive Director and is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Responsibilities will include: Creating compelling, persuasive, relevant, and accurate communications content that will increase the public’s engagement with the organization (in collaboration with members of the National Marketing and Communications cohort) and build community support for improving schools in Phoenix and across the state; Developing and executing a robust marketing and communications strategy in collaboration with the Arizona Executive Director, Government Affairs Director, and Phoenix Organizer to ensure high-impact communications, earned media, and strong support of all Stand for Children Arizona efforts; Conducting market-specific, qualitative research to inform strategic communication outreach to target audiences; Developing and implementing a comprehensive public relations strategy to strengthen and elevate Stand for Children’s brand, elevate and effectively message our policy and electoral campaigns across the state; Creating multi-pronged integrated marketing and communications awareness campaigns that utilize innovative tools to engage members of the community most effectively; Collaborating with the Regional Digital Strategist to manage online platforms to amplify and engage audiences on campaigns; Cultivating and maintaining local media contacts for disseminating press releases and leveraging public relations opportunities; Working with Arizona Executive Director to produce content for development materials, including grant proposals, donor outreach materials, and fundraising campaigns; Editing a range of campaign-focused written materials to ensure clarity, conciseness, and effectiveness; Ensuring that all content is in alignment with Stand for Children’s brand and adheres to network-wide messaging guidelines; and Helping track Stand for Children’s local media coverage. The Arizona Marketing and Communications Director will be joining a national team of professionals committed to improving children’s lives. QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES REQUIRED Strong commitment to and alignment with Stand for Children and Stand for Children Leadership Center’s shared mission of improving public schools; Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a communications or marketing role (campaign writing, online writing, or marketing-related writing experience a plus); Outstanding and fast writer and editor; Knowledge of public education issues and/or experience creating high-impact advocacy campaigns; Experience in a fast-paced campaign environment crafting political campaigns, and familiarity with state political and legislative environment highly preferred; Knowledge of the use of social media in today’s media landscape, including Twitter, Facebook, and the role of blogs in education policy discourse; Skilled at developing audience-specific, persuasive content, translating policy issues into straightforward communications that will resonate with a diverse range of stakeholders; Comprehensive strategic thinking and rapid problem-solving skills to effectively handle crisis communications; Ability to set and adhere to strict deadlines; comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-shifting campaign environment; Excellent planning and organizational skills; Exceptional attention to detail; An entrepreneurial, learning orientation and an ability to embrace and incorporate direct feedback; A tremendous drive and strong ability to achieve outcomes; Existing press and media relationships within Phoenix preferred but not required; Spanish fluency, both written and conversational, preferred.
