Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
20th October 2013
First Reading Exodus 17:8-13 Moses prays, arms outstretched, for Israel in battle, God
answered his prayer and defended Israel – for as long as Moses remained at prayer. Do I
strive to persist in my prayer – always trusting in God’s response?
Second Reading 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2 Paul calls and encourages us to listen to God’s holy
word in the scriptures: this means hearing the word, reflecting on it and praying about it; so
that it guides our lives and change us, drawing us ever closer to God.
Gospel Luke 18:1-8 Jesus tells the story of the unjust judge and the persistent widow: for
the sake of a quiet life, he grants the justice she demands. Jesus praises her persistence,
teaching us to persist in our prayers, – especially in difficult circumstances. We easily
expect, or demand, an instant response from God, wanting him to alter things to meet our
requirement. God wants us to persist with our prayer to allow our prayer – and thus our
relationship with him – to deepen. This may include the grace we need to accept, and come
to terms with, a particularly painful situation.
We pray for all of our sick especially Fr. Fred Robinson, Carol Bennett, Michael Boucher,
Anthony Brownridge, Lily Chappell, Sharon Cilgram, Ann & Bernard Clarke, Mary
Collins, Hannah Corbishley, Kath Courtney, Kath Coyne, Hilda Donald, Jill Doyle, Bridget
Duffy, Pat Edwards, Beryl Evans, Mary Fletcher, Margaret Flood, John Ford, Stephen
Farrell, Paul Flaherty, Louisa Johnston, Linda Jones, Frances Martin, Mary McCabe,
Wendy McLoughlan, Lucy Morrow, Gerard Ormsby, Michael O’Reilly, Violet Redfern,
Peter Riley, Stephen Singleton, Veronica Singleton, June Smith, Linda Summers, Pat
Tarrant, Clara Walker, and Arthur Woodhouse, and all in nursing homes and hospitals. We
pray also for doctors, nurses and all who care for the sick.
Let us pray for those who have died, may our risen Lord welcome them to Paradise.
This week’s saints. Sat, Ss Chad & Cedd, brothers, educated at Lindisfarne under St
Aiden. Cedd founded many churches and monasteries and became bishop of the East
Saxons, died of the plague 664. Chad became bishop of Lichfield. Revered for his holiness,
humility and his dedication to preaching the Gospel.
Vocations: If you think God is calling you to serve his Church as a priest, a deacon or a
religious brother or sister think and pray seriously about it, then talk to Fr. Paul.
Today Sunday 20 October is World Mission Sunday. This is our chance to be united with
Catholics all over the world in prayer, friendship and support. We share in the work of
missionaries and the young churches as they too share their faith and give life, often in
difficult and dangerous circumstances. Today’s collection is essential to the Church’s life
and outreach across the world, sharing God’s love and changing lives. The work of the
young Church depends on our spiritual and material support for its survival and growth.
The money collected today will go in its entirety to support the mission projects
worldwide. If you pay tax you will be able to ‘Gift Aid’ your donation by using the
envelopes and filling in your details.
Sick & housebound parishioners: if you know of any sick or housebound parishioner
who is unable to attend Mass & not, at present, receiving Holy Communion at home but
would like to do so, please let Fr. Paul know as soon as possible.
Next Mass for the sick, infirm & housebound 7 Dec. Note: No midday Mass this day.
Christmas Fair: Sun 24 Nov in St. James’ School hall 12.15 after Mass. Please show your
usual generosity & provide bottles, & other items for raffles and fancy goods. Try to avoid
being on the last minute – this makes planning & organisation difficult. On the day, we
need helpers, and help to set up the stalls on Saturday afternoon. See list on notice board
in porch for volunteers. Your parish needs YOU. Raffle tickets available soon.
November List: November is almost upon us! During the month of November we
traditionally pray for the Holy Souls and our own loved ones who have died. If you would
like to have a Mass celebrated for the soul of a loved one please use the small brown
envelopes that are in the porch.
Our faith is that those who have gone before us need our prayers to speed them on their
final journey to the Lord. Once admitted the saints, in their turn pray for us.
This year Remembrance Sunday is on Sunday 10 November.
Scripture study group: Mondays 1.00 p.m. in presbytery, everybody welcome, why not
join us and understand the scriptures more fully.
Money for nothing! If you pay income tax on wages, pension etc then signing a Gift Aid
Declaration allows the parish to reclaim the tax you have paid on your Church collection if
given through the offertory envelopes. This is worth an extra 25p for £1 donated; £5
would generate a further £1.25. Forms available in porch, or ask Father or Maureen
Sponsor the Sanctuary Lamp: £10 a week. Fill in form, & give it with £10 to Fr. Paul.
Parish Bonus Ball: Wednesday 16th October, No. - No winner.
Parish weekly raffle: Please support this venture by buying tickets and providing prizes.
Parish Prayer Intention Board: We are all asked to pray for these intentions.
Please check the parish notice board each weekend so you are fully up to date with what
is happening in the parish and the diocese.
Inner Healing Retreat days – Prepare for Advent. Sat. 26 Oct, Fri 29 Nov & Sat 30
Nov. Held at St. Hilda’s Northendon. See notice in porch for details.
Advent Starts on Sunday 1 December.
Each Thursday in Advent: Advent Service 10.00 a.m. starting with Morning Prayer and
ending with Mass at 11.00 a.m.
We should all ensure that Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for our Saviour’s birth
– not just for shopping and parties. Advent is a time to reflect, to consider God’s plan for
humanity and our place in it; to reflect on the great mystery of the Incarnation: God became
Man; we prepare to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord; we prepare for his second coming.
Spiritual preparation during Advent means to strive to actively resist the lure of secular
values, and so don’t over indulge in food and drink. We should strive to limit shopping to
what is sensible. Our priority should be to use out time as God intends.
We should observe Advent with some fasting, almsgiving, prayer, and meditation. We
need to plan: to ensure that we start each day as we know that I should, with prayer. To
ensure that thoughts, time, & energy are directed to spiritual preparation for Christmas.
During Advent our collecting bottle is for CAFOD, to provide an opportunity to share
Christmas generosity with our brothers & sisters in the Third World for whom Christmas
day is just another hungry day.
Prayer of St. Chad
Almighty God,
from the first fruits of the English nation who turned to Christ,
you called your servant Chad to be bishop of his own people:
give us grace so to follow his peaceable nature, humble spirit and prayerful life,
that we may truly commend to others the faith which we ourselves profess;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A Prayer for Missionaries
We adore you, Jesus our Shepherd and Saviour.
And we praise and thank you for your living among us.
We ask you to walk beside your missionaries as they seek to proclaim your Gospel.
Cherish, guide, and strengthen them; help them to be patient when they meet frustrations,
and encourage them when they are disappointed.
Lead them, we beseech you, along the path you desire for them.
For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever.
British Summer time ends next Saturday 26 October.
Don’t forget to turn your clocks back and have an extra hour in bed.

Opening Prayer for the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Almighty ever-living God,
grant that we may always conform our will to yours
and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
The Lord's Prayer
We pray to God for his name to be holy, and it's up to us to make his name holy.
We pray for his kingdom to come, and it's up to us to build it.
We pray that his will be done on earth, and it's up to us to do his will.
We pray to him for bread, and it's up to us to make it and share it.
We pray to him for forgiveness, and it's up to us to forgive.
We pray not to fall into evil, and it's up to us to escape from it.
