This is a very popular and highly successful subject area at London’s leading Independent Sixth Form College. In the 2013 DfE A level league tables of sixth form colleges Brampton College came top in London for the thirteenth successive year and fourth nationally. Teaching is in small groups of highly motivated students. Applications are invited from experienced teachers to lead a strong and highly successful Mathematics department. The Mathematics Department Mathematics is the largest and one of the most important departments in the College with 120 AS/A level students in the current academic year. The Mathematics department is currently made up of a Head of Department, a Second in Department and five other members of staff. Some of the departmental staff are examiners for the major examination boards. The department offers A-level Mathematics (Edexcel) and Further Mathematics (Edexcel). The A-level is taught both as a one year and a two year course. GCSE Mathematics is taught as a one-year course (there are two small groups, with no more than 10 students in a class). The department has a history of excellent exam results; for example in Mathematics in the academic year 2011/2012 71% of candidates obtained A*/A grades and 89% A/B grades and in 2012/2013, 53% of candidates obtained A*/A grades and 87% AB grades. The Head of Mathematics will need to work closely with other members of the department. Most of the classes are shared. All of the teaching will be at A level with a high proportion of A2 Mathematics, although there is likely to be some teaching of one year intensive A level courses and possibly also AS. In addition teaching part of the Further Mathematics course will be required. The AS level Mathematics course comprises C1 C2 S1 and at A2 level we currently offer a choice of either M1 or S2 as the applied unit. The Further Mathematics course currently comprises FP1 FP2 FP3 and M2 S2 D1 as the applied units. The Head of Department should be able to teach all components of Mathematics A level and at least some of the Further Mathematics units. The successful candidate should have recent extensive experience of teaching A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics with a proven track record of success. Knowledge of other Mathematics specifications from other boards is desirable. In the last two years the College has aimed to improve the resources accessible to the students on the College VLE. This would be an important objective for the new Head of Department.
