Golden Bears Homecoming Celebration set for Labor Day Weekend
Mayo High School Alumni Association presents its Sixth Annual Alumni Weekend on Labor Day weekend,
Thursday, Aug. 29, through Sunday, Sept. 1, in Darlington. This homecoming celebration includes several events for the community and alumni to celebrate the history and heritage of the Mayo High School
Golden Bears.
“The alumni and affiliates of Mayo High School want to reunite with all generations of the Golden Bear family and celebrate the legacy of our alma mater,” says Alumni Association President Keyda V. Jones of
Atlanta. “This annual alumni weekend gives everyone a chance to do just that as well as show the community what it means to be a Mighty MHS Golden Bear.”
The itinerary begins with an alumni association, members-only meet-and-greet from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 29, at Mayo High School cafeteria.
Then on Friday, enjoy an Alumni Card Party at 2 p.m. at the Mayo High School Hall of Fame on Jessamine
Street. At 6 p.m. that night, enjoy an Alumni Powder Puff Game at James E. Welch Stadium behind
Brunson Dargan Elementary. Admission is $3.
The highlight of the weekend for many is the Alumni Parade through Darlington at 9:30 a.m. Saturday,
Aug. 31. Lineup begins at 7 a.m. on Russell Street. There will be cars, SUVs, floats, boats, trucks, and motorcycles as well as marching bands, dancers, and music.
After the parade, head to Virgil Wells Stadium from 5 to 10 p.m. for a Tailgate Party. Admission is $5, and all children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
There will also be an official Mayo High School Alumni Association After-Party both Friday and Saturday nights at the American Legion.
Sunday morning, gather at A.W. Stanley Gymnasium at 11 a.m. for an uplifting worship service with
Bishop R. Christopher Brown III, Class of 1993, as speaker and with music by Wesley Chapel / St. John
Community Choir.
The grand finale will be the Homecoming Dance at Darlington Country Club from 7:30 p.m. to midnight featuring TOS Live Band and Show. Tickets are $35.
