SPELLING ACTIVITIES
*Guidelines: Please remember to spell each word correctly when completing the activities.
Also, please highlight each spelling word in each activity you do.
Each activity REQUIRES that you use all the spelling words!
1. Learn the words in a foreign language. Make a list of the words in both English and
the foreign language.
2. Create a greeting card using all the spelling words.
3. Create riddles with the spelling words as the answers for each riddle.
4. Create limericks using your spelling words (create as many limericks as necessary to
include all the words).
5. Use all the words in an original story.
6. Create alliterative sentences or tongue-twisters using all the words (if you need to
create more than one, you can).
7. Using a thesaurus, find synonyms for the words and create Super Sentences by listing
as many synonyms as you can in one sentence for each spelling word.
8. Use all the words to create similes or metaphors.
9. Create the lyrics to a rap song using all the spelling words.
10. Write each spelling word five times.
11. Write a letter to someone famous you admire using all the spelling words.
12. Break each word into syllables.
13. List the spelling words in alphabetical order. Then list them in reverse alphabetical
order.
14. Find the antonym, synonym, or root word for each spelling word.
15. Using a dictionary, list all the possible parts of speech each spelling word could be:
i.e. noun, adjective, verb, adverb…etc.
16. Use each word in a sentence- 5 exclamatory, 5-imperative, 5-interrogative, 5declarative. See back of this form for rules.
17. Create compound sentences using each spelling word.
18. Create an acrostic for each spelling word.
19. Find at least 3 other words for each spelling word that has the same prefix or suffix.
20. Take a pretest with an adult. Have them sign the test for credit.
21. Practice using dialogue in a sentence for each word. Be sure to use the quotation
marks correctly.
22. Create your own activity! Just get permission from your teacher first!
Guidelines for Spelling Sentences
The types include imperative (command), interrogative (question), exclamatory (exclaim),
and declarative (statement). Remember to highlight the spelling word.
Imperative sentences make a command or request.
Please get me some water.
Leave that bashful cat alone.
Go to the grocery store for me.
Interrogative sentences form a question.
What do you think I should wear the pink shoes or the white sneakers?
What did the teacher say to you yesterday?
Did you go to the movies yesterday?
Exclamatory sentences show powerful feelings, or emotions.
I'm leaving!
I cannot wait for my birthday!
We crushed that other team good!
I can't believe how tall giraffes really are!
Declarative sentences form a statement.
Tomorrow I will go to the store.
Yesterday I left school early.
I told her to wear the sapphire skirt.
She did not want to eat the penuche that I gave her.
We walked to the mall together.
Use of quotation marks
“I need your attention,” exclaimed the teacher.
Mr. Jones announced, “Today, is Friday Joke Day!”
Compound sentences
I like chocolate ice cream, but my friend likes strawberry.
They wanted to go to Italy, because they wanted to see Venice.
The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
