Gather a Seeker Cell
POY! skit guidelines:







Participants may simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea and speak in their own words.
Most POY! skits require no practice in advance, and need no costumes or props.
Let tots play a brief part. Most scripts have children do the “Echoes” part, under PARTICIPANTS.
Most skits have someone serve as Narrator, who should read a skit beforehand to see how to keep it moving along.
There is no need to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate, as “Echoes”.
Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.
In large groups, ask folks, especially children, to talk loudly and slowly, and add actions if they want.
PARTICIPANTS
Bob (home group leader), who also serves as Narrator
Carrie (young lady)
Louise
Gordie
Prompter (Optional). Prompter shouts a brief line and Echoes repeat it.
Echoes (Optional): children and all adults who want to take part. Make sure Echoes know who
the Prompter is, and that they are to repeat Prompter’s words.
SCRIPT
Bob
I’m Bob Let me tell you how my wife, Louise, and I formed a seekers’ group. A friend,
Carrie, is alone, crying in her apartment. Let’s find out why.
Carrie
(Weep, and then complain loudly, in your own words.)
I can’t believe it! My fiancé left me for that green-eyed bimbo. I’ll poison her!
No ─ wait. It’s his fault. I’ll poison him! No ─ wait. I can’t kill him. I still love the dog!
I’ll kill myself. Nobody cares about me. My dad has no time for me. Mom loves only her
fine clothes and jewels; I can’t ever please her. My brother thinks only about girls and
cars.
How many sleeping pills will it take to end my lousy life?
Louise
(Approach Carrie.) Carrie, you didn’t show up at work. Is something wrong?
Carrie
Oh, Louise! Can you help me write a will?
Louise
A will? Carrie! Oh, no! I knew you’ve been hurting and I’ve been praying for you. Tell
me about it. You can’t face your problem alone. None of us can.
Bob
Carrie explained her desperation, and Louise consoled her. Let’s see what happened then.
Louise
My husband Bob and I follow Jesus now. We’re forming a group for people like you,
Carrie.
Carrie
I hate church. Last time I went, it was boring. They just begged for money. An arrogant
preacher looked down at us from behind a heavy old pulpit and scolded. I felt alone.
Louise
Our Jesus Group is different. People feel comfortable in a small group among friends.
Jesus and His apostles said to bear one another’s burdens and console one another.

That frightens me. I don’t know the Bible and I’m embarrassed if they ask me to talk.
Louise
We don’t push shy people, Carrie. You’re free to say, or not say, anything you want.
We don’t just study the Bible; we do fun, helpful things that the Bible has in it.
We listen to each other, encourage each other and pray for each other.
Carrie
A Jesus Group! That sounds like a sect, something weird. I don’t want dogmatic religious
people telling me what to do!
Louise
Our group is a satellite of an older church, not a sect. We work closely with other groups
and other churches. Don’t worry about being pushed. Let Bob and me come to your
home. You’ll be in charge. Invite your friends so that we won’t outnumber you.
Bob
Louise and Bob come that night to Carrie’s home and she introduced them to a friend.
Carrie
I invited a friend as you said, to protect me from your religious onslaught. Meet Gordie.
Gordie
I brought the booze, Carrie. And a few joints. Bob, I accept all religions; they all teach the
same, how to be one with the cosmos. Okay, get it over with! Preach your eloquent
sermon!
Bob
Gordie, we’re not here to preach at you. We’re here because we all need God’s peace and
healing. I want us to discuss a story Jesus told about a shepherd seeking a lost sheep, just
as God seeks to forgive and heal us after we offend Him with our bad ways.
Gordie
Sounds like a sermon to me!
Bob
But you’ll preach it! You’ll tell the story. Here. It’s from Luke 15.
Gordie
(Read.)
A shepherd had 100 sheep and lost one… He left the 99 in a corral,
and went looking for the lost one until he found it… He laid it over
his shoulders, came and gathered his friends to rejoice with him,
because he’d found his sheep which was lost.
Bob
Do you know what happens in heaven when one of us repents? The angels sing for joy.
Prompter &
Echoes
What joy! Joy! Joy!
Bob
You’ve done the preaching, Gordie. Very good!
Gordie
Hey! Okay, now I’ll take up the offering! Well, Bob, now can I break out the booze?
Bob
Another neighbor whom Carrie had invited had come while Gordie was speaking. She
frowned, and told me angrily that it was stupid to let an unbeliever deal with God’s Word.
Louse
Please, ma’am. This meeting is for Carrie and her friends who don’t attend church. We
mean it to be a joyful gathering of us sinners, like those that Jesus met with in Zacheus’
home.
Bob
It’s healthy to let those who are interested consider God’s Word and discuss it.
Louise
(Embrace Louise.) Carrie, I was once that lost lamb, but Jesus found me, forgave me and
gave me peace.

Gather a Seeker Cell
Oh! I really need God’s peace and forgiveness.
They talked about this, and Carrie relaxed. She trusted Louise and Bob, and began to trust
Jesus, too. If she’d had ears of angels, in that instant she’d have heard joyful singing
above.
Prompter &
Echoes
Salvation! Salvation! Praise God!
Louise
Carrie, I heard you lament that you were disconnected from your family. Let Bob and me
go with you to meet your family and talk to them about Jesus, too. I’ll bring hamburgers
and frozen yogurt, and we can have fun.
Carrie
I’ve discovered something! Believers in Christ really do have fun! Joy and cheer!
Prompter &
Echoes
Joy and cheer! Joy and cheer!
DISCUSS
Let’s pretend we’re in Bob’s Jesus Group, and he’s leading discussion.
What does the shepherd’s story tell us about God?
How does Jesus want us to respond to this truth?
In what way can the shepherd story help people like Louise who are suicidal?
In what ways might Bob and Louise help Carrie get along better with her family?
How would we go about arranging a seekers’ meeting with Carrie’s family?
Who are some of your friends that we can intercede for now in prayer?
