The School of Healthcare invites applications for a Lecturer/Practice Liaison Officer. This is a
diverse and unique role which gives you the opportunity to undertake a lecturing role whilst
actively increasing and supporting practice placement provision for students.
Your lecturing duties will focus on delivering high quality education for pre registration BSc (Hons)
Nursing students, and post registration and postgraduate programmes within the School of
Healthcare. The practice liaison element of the role will require you to develop and facilitate
effective partnerships and networks with the private, independent and voluntary sector with an
innovative and solutions focused approach.
You will have a Masters’ degree in a related discipline and experience of teaching students and /
or professional groups. You will also have current registration on the NMC Professional Register
with some post qualifying clinical experience.
The post is available immediately and will be based in the School of Healthcare (Baines Wing).

Purpose of the post
Background
There are three strategic objectives for the school which drive the purpose of this role:



To integrate Research, Learning and Teaching, Innovation & Knowledge Transfer and
Practice activities within the School and also the wider Faculty.
To deliver high quality, research-orientated interdisciplinary portfolio of health and social
care.
To raise the School’s international profile and standing as an academic centre of
excellence, driving positive change in local, national and international health and social care
communities.
Job Summary
You will draw on clinical or academic experience to deliver teaching and scholarship in the field of
nursing within the school and faculty. You will also play a significant role in developing practice
placement capacity for students. You will contribute to the School through involvement in
innovations in student education, and related scholarship. Administration duties will also be
expected.
The post will focus on delivering education for pre registration BSc (Hons) Nursing students, and
post registration and postgraduate programmes within the School of Healthcare for 50% of the
time and the other 50% will be spent liaising with the private, independent and voluntary sector in
relation to increasing and supporting practice placements for students.
Main duties and responsibilities
Teaching










To undertake research-led teaching 1 in core theoretical and applied areas of nursing on
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
To provide appropriate and timely feedback on student learning on assigned modules
To contribute to the setting and assessment of coursework and examinations
To contribute to the review of modules, programmes and quality assurance mechanisms
To utilise innovative approaches to learning and teaching
To contribute to the planning and development and delivery of modules within the relevant
subject area
To provide support and guidance to students, resolving issues and/or referring to specialist
parties, where appropriate
To be involved in the supervision of students undertaking research projects as appropriate
To undertake teaching in the School as determined by the workload model and
requirements of the school
Contribute to the quality assurance mechanisms of student learning as appropriate
Practice Liaison



Demonstrate increased sustainable placement capacity in private, independent and
voluntary sectors.
Organise and lead meetings with managers, including board members as appropriate, of
potential practice placements across West Yorkshire and use appropriate skills of
diplomacy to persuade them to take students on practice placements.
It is recognised that academics will, at times, teach subjects that are not closely related to their research
specialism, in which case research and scholarship may inform, rather than lead, their teaching.









Develop and facilitate effective and efficient partnerships/networks locally with a view to
sharing and learning about best practice and models of practice placement working.
To identify, report and offer solutions and recommendations regarding the placement of
healthcare students in new community practice placements
As required monitor and complete quality assurance processes including carry out
placement audit’s utilising the SHA’s Practice Placement Quality assurance database tool;
Identify and create opportunities for practice learning within an inter-professional
environment ensuring outputs and information is captured and recorded within the
appropriate documentary and on-line systems;
Support students and mentors in practice environments
Liaise proactively with service partner representatives within Yorkshire and Humber region
to ensure curricula are developed which meet practice needs.
Facilitate effective communication and working relationships within the clinical team
supporting students within practice.
Link with placement areas to participate in support the assessment of practice and
monitoring of student progression in practice.
Undertake clinical work either in or outside the School which has a clear research or
teaching focus related to the work of the School. The nature and extent of these duties will
be a matter for negotiation with the Institute director via the Head of Academic Unit.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria

Holds a Masters’ degree in Nursing or other relevant subject

Holds a recognised teaching qualification (equivalent to ULTRA or NMC Teacher
qualification) or willing to undertake

Worked in clinical practice within the past two years

Current registration with the NMC

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience of teaching students and / or professional groups (formal or informal teaching)
in nursing

Track record of proven scholarship for example through presentation of papers

Experience of supporting students in practice

A willingness and ability to deliver innovative, effective and inspiring teaching

The ability to motivate and engender enthusiasm in others, as evidenced for example in
student feedback obtained from teaching

Proven ability to develop and facilitate effective partnerships and networks with the private,
independent and voluntary sector

Ability to find practical and innovative solutions to complicated and difficult issues

Knowledge and awareness of the potential of current educational technological advances in
learning and teaching and of innovative approaches to teaching

Can demonstrate a clear understanding of teaching agenda at local, regional or national
level

Ability to work within a team environment.
Professional Registration
As an NMC registrant you should obtain annual registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
(NMC). You will be required to maintain such registration so long as you remain employed with the
University Of Leeds, confirming to your line manager that renewal has been carried out as required
by the relevant professional organisation. You should produce documentation giving evidence of
your registration upon request.

University Teaching and Research Award
The Senate of the University has agreed that all newly appointed staff with a contract of 0.5 FTE
and above who have a teaching/ research role and are deemed new to teaching or research in
