CREATE A ROMAN CITY
The year is A.D. 200 and the Roman Emperor, Antoninus Pius, has hired your team to design the blue
print for a new Roman city that is to be built in a newly acquired province in Britannica along the
Thames River. The Emperor is determined to uphold the traditions of the Roman Empire, and
demands that this new city contain all the necessary elements found in a traditional Roman city. Your
team will do research to help plan the design of the city.
Do not disappoint your Emperor!

Your team’s project will contain the following elements:
 A colorful map showing the outline of the city.
 A map legend which details what specific building functions are.
 Roman Citizens
Individual write-ups detailing life inside a Roman city. (These will be scored separately.)
DIRECTIONS FOR THE CITY MAP
Your map will need to be extremely neat and colorful and must take up the entirety of the paper. NOTHING SHOULD BE
LEFT IN PENCIL. Attached to your map will be a map key. The items listed below that have a star will need to be
labeled on the map by a different Roman numeral. The map legend will have descriptions for each of the starred items.
Within your city walls you must have places and things normally found in a Roman city including:
The two main roads (cardo and decamanus), each going in the correct directions along with a grid work design of other streets
*A Triumphal Arch
*Several Theaters
*An aqueduct
*The Forum
*An Amphitheater
Various shops (butcher, baker, black smiths, etc).
*The Senate
*A Public Bathhouse
*The Circus
Public Water Fountain
Houses/Villas for wealthy citizens.
A villa for the emperor.
Apartments for poor citizens.
Outside your city walls you must have the following:
*Barracks for soldiers to train and live
Agricultural Farmland with crops/animals
Somewhere on your map, either flowing through the city or flowing outside of the city walls must be The Thames River. The city
aqueduct must be connected to the river.
You will need to draw and color the buildings/items on your map as accurately as possible. The layout of where the specific
buildings/areas should be consistent with the layout of a typical Roman city. For example, the intersection of the Cardo and
Decamanus will be the Forum.
The top of the paper will have the name of this new Roman City.
A Compass Rose must be placed somewhere on the map.
Total Value of the finished map: 50 points
DIRECTIONS FOR THE MAP LEGEND
Each of the starred items from the map will be labeled with a specific Roman numeral. The map legend will contain
a short description (1-2 sentences) that explains the function of that item or building.
For example: The Senate building is marked with the Roman numeral for 4 (IV). On the map legend the fourth item would be listed as
IV: Senate Building (SENATUS): Followed by a short description.
On the map legend, each of the starred items will need both the English version as well as the Latin translation.
Remember, write ALL Latin words using CAPITAL LETTERS.
The map legend will need to be typed, using appropriate spelling and grammar.
Total Value of the map legend: 20 points
