Guide to the Belvidere Newspaper Obituary Index
The death dates in this index refer to deaths and obituaries mentioned in the Belvidere
Standard, the Belvidere Daily Republican, or the Republican-Northwestern newspapers of
Belvidere, IL. The listees did not necessarily die in Boone County. Many listees were
residents of neighboring counties or were former Boone County residents who died in other
towns or states but whose obituaries or death notices were listed in the Belvidere papers.
Some dates refer to the date of death; other dates refer to the date of the newspaper in which
an obituary or death notice appeared.
The dates that are accompanied by page numbers and/or descriptions of the type of article in
which the death appeared, instead of a burial place, refer to the date and page of the
Belvidere Daily Republican (or Republican-Northwestern, if noted) in which the obituary or
death notice appeared, NOT the date of death. Please refer to the given newspaper dates to
find an exact death date for these.
Index was compiled by staff and volunteers at Ida Public Library’s Local History Room in
Belvidere, Illinois from microfilmed copies of the newspapers listed above.
Keep in mind that due to transcription and typing errors, as well as name changes over the
years, some names may be spelled differently. Some names have been cross-indexed. If you
do not see a name that should be on the list, search for alternate spellings of the name or
contact Ida Public Library’s Local History Room.
Some women were only listed in their obituaries under their husband’s name (i.e. Doe, Mrs.
John). Try searching under a husband’s name if necessary.
Obituaries, death, and funeral notices often appeared days or even weeks after the death. If
searching the index or Belvidere newspapers for an obituary, please keep this in mind.
If you notice any incorrect information in the record, please contact the Local History Room
so that it can be fixed.
