The United States maintained a shaky neutrality for more than two years after war engulfed Europe in the summer of 1914. In practice, the Unite States policies favored the Allies (chiefly Britain and France) against Germany and Austria-Hungary (the Central Powers). Facing ultimate starvation, the Germans finally proclaimed a desperate all-out campaign of submarine warfare in January 1917. As US merchant ships were torpedoed on the high seas, Wilson reluctantly asked for a declaration of war. With a substantial minority dissenting, Congress agreed. War mobilization proceeded in the US with unprecedented emotional fervor, deliberately cultivated by the government. It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war. – Woodrow Wilson, War Message, April 2, 1917 Date/Day Monday, 10/26 Day 4 Period 1 Introduction to WWI Unit – Causes of WWI Reading (pgs. 578-86) Period 5 Introduction to WWI Unit – Causes of WWI Reading (pgs. 578-86) Tuesday, 10/27 Day 1 Mobilizing America Reading (pgs. 587-89) Mobilizing America Reading (pgs. 587-89) War in Europe – New Technologies and Trench Warfare Reading (pgs. 582, 590591) War in Europe – New Technologies and Trench Warfare Reading (pgs. 582, 590591) Wednesday, 10/28 Day 2 Thursday, 10/29 Day 3 Friday, 10/30 Day 4 DROP DROP Period 7 DROP Introduction to WWI Unit – Causes of WWI Reading (pgs. 578-86) War in Europe – New Technologies and Trench Warfare Excerpts from War Horse War in Europe – New Technologies and Trench Warfare Excerpts from War Horse WWI Debate H.W.
