May, 2012, Newsletter
Message from the President
Dear Colleagues,
It has been a productive time since our last newsletter in September, 2011. The AADR meeting held in March, 2012, in Tampa was a
success, with great activities for the Cariology Research Group member (please find the minutes of our Business Meeting at AADR
below). We also had a great number of abstracts submitted to the IADR 2012 meeting, to be held in Iguaçu Falls next month,
reinforcing the continuously growing leadership of the Latin American dental research. The meeting will be a major opportunity for
the dissemination of the IADR commitment with the advancement of dental research worldwide and for the establishment of new
partnerships in dental research.
I would like invite all members to actively participate in our Business Meeting during the IADR, bringing suggestions on how we could
improve the Cariology Research Group membership experience.
I enthusiastically welcome you all to Brazil to make of this meeting a memorable moment in the IADR history!
Livia Tenuta
President
IADR Cariology Research Group

Minutes of the 2012 AADR Cariology Research Group
Business Meeting
Thursday March 22, 2012, 5-6pm
Room 18 (CC), Tampa
A. Call to Order (Anderson Hara)
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Secretary/Treasurer Anderson Hara, who chaired the meeting. Ben Amaechi
(Immediate Past President), Livia Tenuta (President) and Margherita Fontana (Group Program Chair) completed the team of officers
present. Carlos González-Cabezas (Symposium and L&L Organizer) and Stefania Martignon (President Elect) were not present but
submitted reports. A total of 15 members were in attendance. An agenda was presented and approved.
B. AADR Councilor’s Report (Margherita Fontana)
A review of some of the main topics discussed at the AADR Board meeting is included next:
1) JDR: The journal has had a doubling in submissions since 2010. There has been a focus to increase the quality and decrease the
review time. Approximately 40-50% of submitted papers get rejected upon triage.
2) The focus of the Fall symposium in 2012 will be on translational genetics.
3) There was a large discussion about the change in structure of the AADR, which mirrors what is being proposed at the Brazil
meeting for the IADR. The change in structure for AADR was approved. In order for the board to have more time in high impact
governing, board members will be removed from standing committees. This will provide more opportunities to the membership to
participate in the association. The main 4 committees in which the board has reorganized itself include: Board operations committee,
strategic and operational planning committee, performance monitoring/audit committee, and member/stakeholder relations
committee.
4) AADR is focusing a lot of its efforts in advocacy. Their webpage has a lot of good resources. They held an advocacy date in
Washington DC in the Spring of 2012 to advocate for NIH funding.
5) Budget: The total assets for AADR in 2012 were around 6 million dollars. The membership makes about 44% of the income,
followed by the meeting registration (25%). The largest annual expense is the annual meeting. Currently AADR is operating at a
$137K surplus. Headquarters expenses were 1.8% below budget. The 2011 meeting exceeded the budget by over 30%. The Fall
symposium gave a small loss. JDR is profitable. It is proposed that the membership dues will increase to $125 in 2013 and $130 in
2014. There is no proposed change in JDR dues for the next 2 years. Meeting registrations are also proposed to increase.
6) Membership declined by 3.8% in 2012, but students increased 9.7%.

Keynote Speakers
Wednesday Oral Block 2: Dr. Eva Soderling. Title: "Probiotics: risks vs. benefits for dental health"
Wednesday Oral Block 4: Dr. Sebastian Paris. Title: "Caries Management by Resin Infiltration – the Scientific Evidence"
Issues:





Unavoidable to have a lot of overlap given the meeting schedule: oral on Wednesday and Saturday, posters Thursday and
Friday. Tried to have no more than 2 sessions or session and workshop/symposium overlap, and tried that if they
overlapped they would not be identical topics.
Tried to respect time request by speakers. (only 1 person requested a poster on Wednesday, which we could not provide)
A lot of poor quality abstracts.
Tried to respect presentation preference, but not always: best were chosen for orals (no authors had said they would
withdraw abstract if not given their preference).
Tried to keep rejection rates to what IADR expects.
Discussion:
It was proposed that abstract review could be improved if:
1) Authors names were removed from the abstract (blind review)
2) Mentor had to sign the abstract electronically during the submission process
3) IADR consider providing training sessions for mentors during the annual meetings
