September, 2011, Newsletter
Message from the President
Dear Colleagues,
It is a great honor to represent you as the president of the Cariology Research Group. In this first newsletter after the 2011 IADR
meeting in San Diego, I would like to thank all the participants who made the meeting a great success, either by raising the level of
caries research by the presentation of novel and interesting investigations or by stimulating fruitful discussions during the Cariology
Group scientific sessions. Further details of the activities held in the meeting can be found below in this newsletter.
After the San Diego meeting, I had the chance to represent the IADR Cariology Research Group, along with IADR Executive
Director Christopher Fox, on the Workshop for Effective use of Fluorides in Asia, held in Phang-Nga, Thailand, from March 22nd to
24th, with support from the WHO, FDI and IADR. Presenting the theme “Fluoride Research: Unfinished Task”, I could point out the
undoubtful oral health advances brought by the research on fluorides and indicate wide avenues for future investigation. Concluding
that research on fluoride (or caries) is an “unfinishing” task, I embraced the Cariology Research Group leadership on caries and
related subjects research. The proceedings of the Workshop, focused on the discussion on fluoride use in Asian countries, will be
published in the January issue of Advances in Dental Research.
In our future agenda, the 2012 AADR meeting in Tampa, Florida in March and IADR meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July promise
plentiful activities for the Cariology Research Group members; I encourage you all to save these dates and help us make these
congresses highly profitable.
I wish you an enjoyable end of the year and all the success in your research.

IADR Cariology Research Group

Minutes of the 2011 Annual Business Meeting
Thursday March 17, 2011, 5-6pm, IADR General Session, San Diego, California
Room 24A (SDCC), San Diego
Time: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Secretary/Treasurer Anderson Hara, who chaired the meeting. Ben Amaechi
(President), Livia Tenuta (President Elect), Franklyn Garcia-Godoy (Immediate Past President), Margherita Fontana (Group Program
Chair) and Carlos González-Cabezas (Symposium and L&L Organizer) completed the team of officers present. A total of 38 members
were in attendance. Minutes of the 2010 IADR CRG Business Meeting in San Diego, previously distributed electronically (group’s
newsletters) to members, was unanimously approved.
President’s report presented by the President Dr. Ben Amaechi:
Dear Colleagues,
First and foremost, I thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to serve you as the president of the IADR Cariology Research
Group (CRG). Although 2010 went so fast, our group made impressive contributions in global cariology activities. CRG was involved
in the IADR “Grand Challenge” Task Group on Dental Caries of the IADR Global Oral Heath Inequalities – the research agenda. The
task group on dental caries, chaired by Professor Nigel Pitts, was charged with the duty of identifying the (1) global Inequalities in Oral
Health and Disease, and likely reasons to account for these Oral Heath Inequalities, (2) fundamental gaps in knowledge and
understanding, (3) reasons for failure to implement at scale measures which have been shown to be effective in research studies, (4)
priorities for both basic and applied research, and (5) to develop a three to five year research agenda, which will lead to key
improvements in global oral health. CRG also participated actively in the Joint ORCA-ADEE Workshop on the Development of a
European Curriculum for Cariology held in Berlin. The products of these two activities will soon be published in scientific journals.
CRG was also called to participate in the review of the newly established IADR-Colgate Community-Based Research Award for
Caries Prevention. We are very thankful to Drs. Helen Whelton, Hendrik Meyer-Lückel, Woosung Sohn, Stefania
Martignon and Christopher Okunseri for helping with this review process. We also express our gratitude to the CRG members
of the executive that reviewed the Lions IADR/Lion Dental Research Award for Junior Investigators, when the CRG was called to
participate in this review. On request of the AADR Science Information Committee, the CRG made an input to identifying potential
topics in cariology that are relevant and current and for which policy or position papers can be established by the AADR. Thanks to
our members from around the globe who responded quickly and contributed to the group’s input. We also wish to express our
profound gratitude to all the members who help in reviewing and responding to the standards and guidelines on fluoride in drinking
water announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
and to those who devoted their time and effort in reviewing the American Dental Association proposed paper on non-fluoride caries
preventive agents.
One of our objectives for 2010 was to enhance our group's scope and reach out to other fields as much as possible i.e. increase our
membership to embrace IADR members working in any area relating to dental caries. The membership table that will be presented in
this business meeting is an obvious testimony that we are achieving this objective, and every member is urged to help in this pursuit in
anyway he/she could. Today CRG is the second largest research group in IADR. Based on our size and just like the largest research
group, dental materials group, the group has agreed on topic-based abstract submission and review scheme in which abstracts were
submitted to six possible categories. This was piloted this year and it worked excellently well. We like to hear from you about this
system as we hope to continue with it in subsequent meeting. The 2010 Annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain was very successful with a
record attendance.
We are very thankful to the Group Program Chairs, Margherita Fontana, Franklin Garcia-Godoy, Bennett T. Amaechi,
Tilly C. Peters, for preparing an exciting program for us for this San Diego meeting, and the reviewers, Drs. Marilia Buzalaf,
David Manton, Aylin Baysan, Sergio Uribe, Sebastian Paris and Robert Karlinsey, who helped with the review of the 297
abstracts submitted to the CRG.
In closing, I would like to thank you for the honor to serve as your president for 2010-2011. I am also thankful to our immediate past
president Dr. Franklin Garcia-Godoy, who helped the group in many aspects during this year activities.
I wish you enjoy your stay in San Diego.
