3.02 Career Management Vocabulary
1. Alternatives
A choice limited to one of two possibilities, as of things, propositions,
or coursed of action.
2. Benefit
A payment or gift
3. Bias
A tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than
others that usually results in treating some people unfairly
4. Chance
The occurrence and development of events in the absence of any
obvious design.
5. Characteristics
Pertaining to, constituting, or indicating the character or peculiar
quality of a person or thing; typical; distinctive
6. Complaint Decision The choice is made for you by someone else, with your permission.
Making
7. Compromise
Something that combines qualities or elements of different things; to
give up something to reach a decision.
8. Consequence
The effect, result, or outcome of something occurring earlier.
9. Decision
A choice or judgment; helps to meet goals; the question that needs
to be answered in the decision making process.
10. Decision making
process
The process of choosing between two or more alternatives or
options; most logical way to make a decision.
11. Decision making
style
The typical manner in which a person makes a decision.
12. Delaying Decision
Making
The need for decision making is not recognized or, if recognized, it is
put off for some future date.
13. Eldercare
The care of older persons/parent, especially in the home and by a
son or daughter.
14. Employee Benefits
Indirect and non-cash compensation in addition to their normal
wages or salaries paid to an employee. Some benefits are mandated
by law (such as social security, unemployment compensation, and
workers compensation), others vary from firm to firm or industry to
industry (such as health insurance, life insurance, medical plan, paid
vacation, pension, and gratuity).
15. Family Medical
Leave Act
Allows employees of government agencies and companies with more
than fifty employees to take up to three months of unpaid leave
during or after a pregnancy.
16. Flex time
A system of working that allows an employee to choose, within
limits, the hours for starting and leaving work each day.
17. Fringe Benefit
An extra benefit supplementing an employee's salary, for example, a
company car, subsidized meals, bonus, privilege, etc.
18. Impulsive Decision
Making
A choice is made without adequately finding alternatives or
collecting information about the self and alternatives.
19. Job sharing
To share the responsibilities and duties of a single full time job with
one or more other employees.
20. Major decision
Important decision that influences a person’s future such as a
career decision.
21. Painful Decision
Making
A lot of time and energy are spent, but a choice is not made.
22. Planful Decision
Making
A step-by-step process is used to identify alternatives and to choose
one.
23. Pre-requisite skill
acquisition
(pre-requisite = predecessor course) the necessity to master a basic
skill prior to a higher level skill, hierarchical learning, scaffolding. i.e.
– walk before run, add before subtract or multiply, etc.
24. Routine
A series of activities performed regularly.
25. Stability
The state or quality of being stable
26. Stereotype
An oversimplified and distorted belief about a person or group.
27. Telecommuting
Working at home by using a computer terminal electronically linked
to one’s place of employment.
