Moani Revoir A1 January 22, 2015 Extreme Weather Have you heard about the extreme weather conditions that took down Flight 5 in Malaysia? Hurricane winds, heavy rains, up-drafts, and down-drafts all lead to the catastrophe on November 10, 2014. The pilots radioed control asking permission to fly higher, trying to avoid the storm but were told, ‘No,’ there were too many other planes in the area. Moments later, the plane was gone. Investigators are still trying to find out what happened. Experts tell us that up-drafts are sudden, fast gusts of hot air that could cause an airplane to be pushed up. Down-drafts are sudden gusts of cold air that push an airplane down towards the ground. Add pounding, blinding rain and a pilot won’t be able to tell where he is at. A second down-draft could cause the plane to crash into the ground or water before the pilot even realizes that he is flying so low.
