2013-2014 Student Clubs and Activities Mableton Elementary School Mableton Elementary staff and PTA sponsor a variety of opportunities for students to use their creative talents before, during and after school. These clubs provide a positive, safe, environment that helps students achieve their personal best and encourages responsible, productive citizenship. Whether it is singing, cheering, or knitting, it is our mission to inspire life-long learning in all of our students! Art Club The art club is composed of 5th graders who have expressed an interest in strengthening their artistic skills. Students work on some community service projects as well as pursuing their own creative niche. Art Club members meet on Thursday afternoons from 2:10-3:30. Mrs. Anthony is the club sponsor. Cheerleading In cheerleading, we offer a friendly atmosphere for young girls to learn the basic fundamentals of cheering. The students learn dance routines, cheers, and jumps. We encourage teamwork and good sportsmanship. We meet every Thursday in the gym. 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders meet from 3:00-3:30 and 4th and 5th graders meet from 3:30-4:00. The Chess Club is sponsored by PTA and meets on Mondays at 2:45. Students learn the basics of chess as they become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Please contact PTA if you need additional information. Chorus During the year, Mableton's 4th and 5th grade chorus meets every Wednesday after school. The purpose is to refine vocal skills. In the full hour meeting, the chorus practices repertoire for future performances, discusses the meaning and influences of the song choice, and has a good time! There are a variety of performance opportunities in the school and around the community. If a child is interested in joining, please contact Lydia Grant, Music Specialist, at lydia.grant@cobbk12.org. The chorus meets on Wednesday from 2:30-4:15 in the music room. Karate Learn the fundamentals of karate on Fridays at 2:45pm. Karate teaches students to be self-disciplined and well as self-defense. This club is sponsored by our PTA. Please contact PTA if you have additional questions. Lunch Bunch Book Club Mableton Elementary offers lunch time book clubs for the highest readers in each grade level who have the desire to read more challenging material. The Lunch Bunch Book Club has just a few simple rules: Be enthusiastic; be prepared; love to read. During the periodic meetings, club members discuss text elements, make predictions, answer questions, and have fun. The book titles are student-selected and usually appear on the Accelerated Reader list. Students are chosen based on Developmental Reading Assessment scores (DRA) and teacher recommendation. Math Club Math Club gives students an opportunity to start their mornings with a challenge, as they compute, discuss, and solve problems. This year SUMS will participate in a math competition in early spring. Students are referred by their teacher, based on student’s interest in math challenges, as well as a commitment to attendance. The club is open to 3rd-5th graders. The club meets on Thursdays at 7:00am. Safety Patrol th Every year we offer an opportunity to responsible 5 grade students to be part of our Safety Patrol Task Force. These students help traffic move freely and safely through the halls, assist the students at breakfast and while loading and unloading busses. They are called to be positive role models to other students by obeying school rules, having a positive attitude about school, completing their work and showing good character. The sponsors for Safety Patrol are Mrs. Kraus (P.E. teacher) and Mrs. Chabib and Mr. Pearson (school counselors). If you have questions about the program, please call the school at 770-819-2513. Spanish Club The purpose of Spanish club is to provide students with the opportunity to speak Spanish to their peers by learning the basic Spanish phrases and vocabulary. In Spanish club, we offer many activities to help students increase their knowledge of the Spanish language. We make books, do Smartboard games, play vocabulary games using the new vocabulary we learn. Spanish Club is part of the ASP program and is offered every Monday from 2:45 to 3:45 in the media center. Student Council Mableton Elementary Student Council is a student selected group that allows representatives from each class to assist in the development of the Mableton school community. Each student council representative serves for one school year and updates and organizes service projects for their own classes. In addition, Student Council representatives assist at school events and PTA meetings. The Mableton Student Council is teacher lead and meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:15 a.m. For more information on the Mableton Elementary Student Council please contact joanne.fincham@cobbk12.org. Robotics Club The Robotics Club is offered to students in grades 3 – 5 and is a way to incorporate science, design, technology, math and literacy in a FUN environment! Students will be able to explore the world of STEM and will be working in teams to try to solve real-world problems. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Educational Robotics program allows students to build robots and use software to plan, test, and modify sequences of instructions from a variety of real life robotic behaviors. These are NOT remote controlled robots! The students must learn basic computer programming skills in order to make their group’s robot successful in completing the challenges that will be placed in front of them. It’s another exciting way to include Higher Order Thinking Skills into our school activities! Our club meets on Fridays at 7:00am. Science Olympiad What is the Science Olympiad? If you are in grades 3-5 and have an interest in Science, then you should consider applying for our Science Olympiad team. Science Olympiad is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that covers earth, life, and physical science topics. It also incorporates both engineering and technological principles in a meaningful and relevant manner. In addition, Science Olympiad provides students with a variety of highly engaging activities that naturally generate interest, enthusiasm, and passion for scientific exploration. Students will have the opportunity to participate in friendly competitions during the spring at the county and state levels. There is a $20.00 registration fee for this program. Applications will be available September 6th. Meetings will be held bi-weekly beginning October 3rd from 2:30pm-4:00pm. Club Scientific Are you a Biological Brainiac or a Scientific Superstar? If so, this is a club for you! Students in grades 1-5 will participate in two hands-on sessions, “Biological Brainiacs”, and “Scientific Superstars”. Topics for both sessions include animal habitats, chemical compounds, oceans, inventions, great scientists, robots and more. The club will meet on Mondays from 2:30-3:30 or on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30. The cost for each student is $210. Please contact Ms. Erin Harris at erin.harris@cobbk12.org for more information. Writing Club The Mableton Elementary Writing Club was in response to students expressing an interest in a club that fostered their love of writing. Our group meets every Tuesday morning from 7:15 to 7:50. Students are participating in many creative writing projects. For example, writing commercials to promote the Six Flags Reading Program. Students will also create Super Heroes, and will create their own hard covered books. Students also have plans to produce a digital newspaper for the school community, as well as other technology projects. Guest speakers and field trips are also planned for the Writing Club. This is a great opportunity for our Aspiring Authors.
