Homework Assignment: Time Period 1
Due: Dec 4, 2013
3-2-1 Blast Off
OBJECTIVE: You will
construct a rocket designed
to stay aloft for the greatest
amount of time.
MATERIALS:
• 2-liter plastic carbonated
beverage bottle
• Tape and/or silicone or
polyurethane-based glue
• Other materials such as
cardboard or poster board
may be necessary for fins,
nose, etc.
Backyard Botanist
Create a poster, booklet or
brochure that identifies
items from the Specimen
List that are NC official
state Symbols. *
OR
Create a PowerPoint or
Prezi presentation that
identifies at least 10 of the
items on the Official
Specimen List.*
Rockets must use a blunt or
round nose with a minimum
radius of 1.5 cm.

Describe It, Build It
Weather Permitting
OBJECTIVE: You will build a
device using various materials
found at your house. Write
directions of how you built your
device so that someone would be
able to build an exact replica.
(Your materials will be returned to you
after being reviewed by coaches.)
MATERIALS:

Any inexpensive materials
found around your house:
straws, push pins, styrofoam
balls, paper cups, Popsicle
sticks, etc
Commercial sets:
Googolplex, K’nex, Tinker
Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos
Create a picture book that
identifies and explains the
following severe storms:
tornado, hurricane, derecho,
haboob, water spout, and
dust devil.
OR
Research either the jet
stream or the Gulf Stream.
Be able to tell it’s effect on
local weather. Find a
creative way to teach this to
your fellow Olympians.

Create a 1-2 minute routine that
includes at least 4 different
physical activities (jumping
jacks, pushups, sit ups, lunges,
hula hooping, etc.)

Pretend you are a container of
water. Write and act out a skit

device constructed out of
specified materials to protect a
raw egg from breaking when
tossed horizontally at a target
placed on the floor.
OBJECTIVE: You will build a
structure using only the
materials listed below. For this
assignment, you will build a boat
that holds the most marbles or
pennies before sinking.
OBJECTIVE: To design and
build the lightest pasta bridge,
with the highest structural
efficiency, capable of supporting
a load of up to 10 kg.
Identify 5 traits that you have
inherited from someone in
your family. Think of a
creative way to display/share
these traits.

Classify the vertebrate dinosaurs
by their time period (Triassic,
Jurassic, Cretaceous) or whether
they are carnivores, herbivores,
or omnivores.
Be able to explain the difference
between a solution and a
mixture. Be able to explain how
they can be separated.

Create a game that could be used
to help learn the bone and joints
from the Official Bone and
Muscle List.

Collect samples of at least 4 of
the following: table salt, baking
soda, talc, borax (sod,
cornstarch, sugar (crystal),
sand, flour. Identify at least four
properties of each.
Select at least 10 words from the
list of vocabulary (see event
resource). Write one word per
index card or post it note. Come
up with an action (charade) to
represent each word.
Bone & Brawn
Create a foldable that defines
and gives examples of the three
muscle types: Skeletal, Cardiac
and Smooth.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be
learning about the 18 events in this year’s
competition. We want to know which ones are
your strengths. To do this, you will select a
minimum of one event per time period to show us
what you are interested in learning more about.
Be ready to present your homework assignment
on the designated date. If you want to be
considered for the team, these first homework
assignments are crucial. We have high
expectations of each of you!
