Dear Church Members:
My name is Melanie Davis, and I am the Gifted and Talented teacher at Pass Road
Elementary and Central Elementary Schools. We are starting a new project this year
involving the history of Gulfport.
Our students will research the lives of those buried in Mississippi City Cemetery. This is
one of the oldest cemeteries in Gulfport, and has always been integrated. We have begun
our research by working with MGCCC students, The Gulfport Historical Society, and a
local nursing home. Students are conducting research through books, text, and oral
history to learn the historical background of those buried in the cemetery. Students will
then create a skit acting as these persons through information they have gathered.
Our intended outcome is for the program is to expose students to the experience of
historical research and bring the older generation in as mentors to share their knowledge
with the younger generation. The fact that this cemetery was integrated before 1920 gives
us a unique aspect to explore. This cemetery research project will help bring the
community together.
In order to make all of our activities possible, we need your help. We are looking for
relatives whose ancestors are buried at the Mississippi City Cemetery who would be
willing to share their family members' history with our students.
If you know of someone who would like to share their familial history, please contact me.
I thank you, in advance, for your continued support of gifted education!
Sincerely,
Melanie Davis
