The Promoter: Transcription of information both common and unique

April 17, 2015

From the Office of the Coordinator:

We received many suggestions from students in the Doctoral Student Advisory Meeting.

Thank You!

Initial thoughts: (Some addressed changes in italics)

Students proposed that a listing of all approved online courses be posted along with feedback for others who may wish to take those. We cannot provide a list of courses competing with Clemson University courses but we can talk about what other students have taken elsewhere and their experiences.

There needs to be more options available for those who are unable to take courses on campus.

It is hard for students to plan their semester if classes, dates and times are not set early. The Fall ’15 class times are set.

Can this be promoted as more of an online program to entice new applicants? It is already promoted as an online program. We’ll work on making the promotion more visible.

It is almost impossible to choose and commit to your committee during the 1" year in the program.

This will be revised to “It is recommended that your committee Chair, at least, be identified sometime during the second year.

However, students may wait until their third year if desired.”

The handbook is overwhelming, can it be simplified. Will work on what can be simplified.

Would it be possible to chart a year-by-year progression of things that need to be completed during that year (in addition to the courses) forms, dissertations, etc.

See below.

If a link to the promoter could be added to the website that would list the new student information and also show off annual highlights. Requested.

Promoter needs to include info from the coordinator, conference info, abstracts, more visuals Distinguished Researcher-could we invite more business people for future jobs (how to get resumes out, career opportunities)

Distinguished Researcher in 2015-16 will include more interdisciplinary researchers . Please offer your suggestions to the HCG faculty.

Will need to hold fundraisers for ASHG or everyone would need to submit a poster-October in Baltimore.

ISONG is November in Pittsburg

Regarding the courses curriculum:

Will be looking at curriculum and hours, may decrease hours, currently at 70 will look to make Masters available for teaching. Met with HCG faculty and team to start reviewing potential revisions.

Review of courses: o Bioinformatics-great o 905 Ethics-needs more policy o Decrease core courses o 610 Population-not relevant o Healthcare Research-applications are great-helpful o 901-spealkers used same slides o 814 Advanced Genetics-get rid of it o 907 applied-great! Theory-good! o Interdisciplinary Pharmacogenomics-good! o Grant writing/Grant Submission-motivate people to submit early o 989 Selected Topics-need to produce something for publication o Use Public Health Methods instead of Psych-take Statistics through Public

Health-Public Health needs to have more of a collaboration with HCG o Offer more alternatives in Statistics (ex: Experimental Statistics)

We would really like to take a group of students to ASHG in the Fall, 2015 but we need to plan and fundraise.

Student-member rate is $175 to attend. The Day’s Inn is across from the convention center and would be a great place to stay. We’ll watch for the hotel reservation site to open and get a block of rooms; two per room. If you have a poster or podium session you can get $1000 from HEHD College to help with travel (as long as it’s available next year).

What if the FTO gene was absent, was enhanced, and FTO was overexpressed, will the cell become a fat cell? FTO gene variant may affect not only FTO, but also neighbouring genes in that region of the chromosome. Read:
