BA Hons Fashion Design and Textiles Lauren Beck – Year 3 Proposal Fashion Design and Textiles; Major Project/ Essay! 1. Statement Of Topic: In this project I will be producing at least six outfits which will all be supported by relevant visual research in a sketchbook and on boards. I will also be producing a 4000 word essay, in which explains and discusses the contexts and ideas learned in the unit. I will be starting off my research by looking at the era of the 1920s to 1930s, looking at the men and woman’s fashion. For my research for the woman of the 1920s, I will be looking into the flapper dress and some art deco prints. For the men’s fashion I will be looking at the different style of suits, waistcoats, shirts and trousers within the 1920s. I will then be researching style icons of the 20s and one I will be particularly focusing on will be Coco Chanel, and this is where I will be forming the start of my essay. For my essay I am looking at how Coco Chanel influenced woman in the 1920s to 1930s. Thereafter I am looking at some modern variations of the 1920s to present; this will allow me to have a wider view on how aspects have been transformed or even brought back. Following all of that I will be then looking at fashion illustrations which will then be inspirational for my final collection drawings. Overall I want to come to an end from gathering all my research to then produce my final collection in which where my main inspiration came from which is, The Great Gatsby. 2. Aims And Objectives: Aims: By the end of my project I want to have produced a collection of both men and woman’s outfits; 3 woman and 3 men’s. Each of which will include a variety of garments. I want each of my woman’s outfits to correspond with the men’s outfits so they can be worn either individual or within a couples outfit. Also for the woman I want to make the outfits and to also make elbow length gloves and a head piece to be worn with the outfits. For my essay I aim to produce a 4000 word essay in which relates to my final major project. I will research information from books, internet and journals. Objectives: To achieve my aims, I will be gathering enough information for me to get a full understanding of the era and theme that I want to accomplish. I will be reading books, magazines and also looking on the internet and from this I will gather the Lauren Beck information found and produce it within a sketchbook to then be able to produce my final collection of 6 outfits. I will also experiment with different fabric types and techniques to then be able to find the best results in which I can then take to my final collection and possibly use. 3. Secondary Research: I have looked at specific literature in which I have found inspirational for my project and essay and in which has given me ideas for my work. These include books and magazines such as; Vintage Fashion and Couture From Poiret to McQueen By Kerry Taylor The Vintage Pattern Selector By Jo Barnfield The Great Gatsby By F.Scott Fitzgerald Art Deco Fashion By Suzanne Lussier Fashion In The Time Of The Great Gatsby By LaLonnie Lehman Coco Chanel By Justine Picardie Magazines: Drapers Records The Voice Of Vintage – Vintage Life I will be also looking at collections, for example; The Ralph Laurens 1920s style tribute: The Great Gatsby Inspired Fashions. I feel that these will all be relevant to my work as they all have different approaches to fashion and to the 1920s. Some of the fashion being traditional and some being more modern, all of which I can take inspiration from to produce my final collection and my essay. 4. Primary Research: For my primary research within my final project, I will be fabric sourcing and researching to see which fabric I feel is in best relation to my theme. By doing this I will visit different fabric shops and gather different samples and I will then research to see which ones have the higher qualities. I will also be modelling on the stand so I can see the sort of shapes I want to take forward; and I will also be developing my designs to decide on a final collection. 5. Market Research: My target will be aimed at both men and woman in their late 20s early 30s. It will be produced for a vintage one off store. By doing research I will look at who my competitors may be and this I would do by looking at individual boutiques and vintage stores. Lauren Beck 6.
