IPL Project 1 IPL Final Project Brittney Buckland INFO 521 Missy Harvey December 5, 2012 IPL Project 2 For this project I answered three questions. All three questions came from the research questions category on QRC. All names and email addresses other than my own have been removed from my transcripts of questions and feedback. Question 1 Transcript: > Needed by: no need by > > Question: > "Golden Rose" of Paustovsky posted for the first time in any > magazine? > > name: XXXXXX (removed by BB) > from: XXXXXXX@yahoo.com (removed by BB) > confirm: XXXXXXXX @yahoo.com (removed by BB) > location: Vietnamese > area: Humanities > reason: study in school > > Greetings from ipl2! Thank you for submitting your question to us. From what I understand your question refers to when the book "Golden Rose" by Konstantin Paustovsky was first published. If this is not correct do not hesitate on giving me more information on what you are looking for. If you are indeed looking for the first publication date for this book I found a few general answers. The most I can narrow it down to is sometime in the 1950s. I came to this conclusion with the help of a few sources. I found the book listed in the Worldcat catalog with a date listed as 195-. The website is as follows: http://www.worldcat.org/title/golden-rose-literature-in-themaking/oclc/3076785 This link is quite long and could break, so here is a shortened version for your convenience. http://tinyurl.com/cmmnb8r Worldcat is a reputable source as it is an online database of library holdings catalogs from all over the world. The 1950s version is the earliest holding that I can find of the book in IPL Project 3 this catalog. According to Worldcat the closest this book can be found to Vietnam is Japan and Australia. Another site that I found the same information at was: http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/1741351 This is the online catalog for Stanford University. It is reputable as a catalog from a credible university. It also mentions 195- as the publishing date for "Golden Rose". By finding this repetitive date I believe that the first site I found is more accurate. The last source I looked at for information was: http://www.sovlit.net/bios/paustovsky.html This is an online encyclopedia of soviet literature. On this webpage it mentions that Paustovsky wrote "Golden Rose" in 1955. This possibly narrows down a more exact date of publication for you. The information desired on this page is towards the bottom of the text. To find each of these sites I did a Google search for the following terms: "Golden Rose" Paustovsky Paustovskiy "Golden Rose" Paustovskiy, I found is an alternate spelling for Paustovsky. www.Google.com I hope this helps with your research! Thank you again for using ipl2 for your research needs. Feel free to come back to us with any questions you may have! Feedback to Question 1: Hi Brittney, You did a fine job answering the question. You followed all of the mandatory elements the IPL requires and did a great job explaining why you selected the resources for the patron. I will caution in the future to be careful on assuming the context of a question. From the question, you interpreted that the patron was inquiring when the “Golden Rose” was published. The question IPL Project 4 reads, "Golden Rose" of Paustovsky posted for the first time in any magazine? Could this not also literally mean when the story was published in a magazine? Or when the first review of Golden Rose by Paustovsky was published in a magazine? Given the patron is from Vietnam, it is quite possible that their grasp of the English language, may not coincide with their thinking within the Vietnam language. There may be some difficultly to specifically articulate what they are looking for and what they mean. For foreign patrons who have difficultly expressing themselves in writing (in fact I just had a question from Ghana today) I would suggest conducting a reference interview. This will give you an opportunity to clarify their thinking and help you narrow down what they are looking for. Maybe the patron really is looking for the first publication date of Golden Rose. When in doubt, submit a reference interview. Unless you are 100% percent sure; you can decipher and understand what the patron wants, do a reference interview. Please do not assume! Also please check to make sure that all hyperlinks you submit are in working order. You must include http:// in order for a hyperlink to activate within the QRC. Your google link is broken. This really isn’t a big deal, since Google is an internet mainstay. However, if someone is using the computer for the first time, or has been living under a rock, its important that we provide the patron with active and working hyperlinks. Thank you for effort on the IPL Brittney! If you ever have additional questions, or need assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at the IPL. We want to ensure that your reference time here is helpful and not overwhelming. Take care and best wishes on your remaining quarter at Drexel. Take Care, XXXXX (removed by BB) Feedback 2 to Question 1: Hi Brittney, It sounds like you answered a tough question with some solid resources for the patron. You did a great job in finding resources that will lead the patron in the right direction and explaining your choices. There were just two little details to watch out for next time. In IPL Project 5 the mandatory elements, it states " If you are not able to provide the type of answer the user wants (either because it doesn't exist, isn't online, etc.), explain why." This can be found under the third element, the link is below. http://training.ipl.org/div/backroom/refvols/students/IPLTrainingManual.pdf One last thing. We need to make sure that the links we provide work so the patron can access what we are leading them to find. "Working links (URLs) are a critical component of providing users with the answers they need. If URLs aren't functional, users are often left with questions unanswered. For that reason, every possible effort must be made to ensure that URLs sent are fully functional for each user." Great job with the answer! Keep up the good work! XXXXX (removed by BB) Feedback 3 to Question 1: Hi Brittany, Thanks for the good work you did in answering this patron's question. You gave the patron several reputable sources to review that provided indications of what the correct answer might be, since it is not 100% clear in this situation. Since the patron is not from the U.S., it may have been helpful to mention that a library catalog often states the full year of publication of a work, so it is uncommon to find a year stated as "195-". Otherwise, the patron could think that this is a common U.S. library practice. You provided a clear and easy to follow explanation of the search you conducted and why you selected these resources. However, your Google.com link was not formatted correctly since the "http://"; was missing. You can review Module 1's "Sources or Answer" section for more information on this. http://training.ipl.org/backroom/refvols/students/module1.html#sources One concern I had was that it was not clear to me whether the patron was asking for the publication of the book Golden Rose or whether the information that the patron wanted actually did have to do with a magazine of some sort. It may have been that the book was originally serialized over several issues of a magazine and later published in one complete volume as a book, or could be IPL Project 6 many other magazine-related reasons, really. In this situation, I would have suggested you conduct a reference interview to ensure that you are clear on the patron's question. It is best not to assume that the patron is asking for a particular thing if the question is ambiguous, especially if it appear that the patron may be an English language learner. You can review Module 2 of the training manual for more on this: http://training.ipl.org/backroom/refvols/students/module2.html Overall, you provided a great answer to this question. Good work! Best regards, XXXXXX, Drexel seminar student (removed by BB) Log to Question 1: 1. Amount of time spent on the question. Claimed on: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 16:54:33 Answered on: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 21:33:35 Time to answer: Approximately 4 hours. 2. Sources consulted and strategies used (besides the ones used for the answer). In my research for this question I began with a quick search in ipl2 for the title and author and then furthered my search for the same topics in Google so that I could familiarize myself with the topic since I had never heard of the publication or the author before. I then looked for the actual publication in search engines like Google and Yahoo! 3. Critique of each question that indicates your level of satisfaction with the answers you provided. I felt pretty good about my answer to this question. Although the question was worded in a way that made it a little difficult to understand, I felt that I came to the correct conclusion on what the user was looking for. In my searching the only copies I could find were of books, I could not find any mention of it as an article in a magazine. This is what made me confident that I could search for the earliest publication date without asking for more information. I found several sites that helped me track the year down to a decade but after that the dates were fuzzy. There were also limited search results on the topic so I did not have too much information to sort through, which led me to think my answer was going to be reliable instead of missing something in too many search results. IPL Project 7 4. Anything you would do differently in the future. I got a lot of good feedback on this question, which helped me with the other questions I answered. Mentioned in the feedback was a tip to explain why I might be unable to answer the question, so if faced with a similar situation in the future I would explain to the user that I could not find “Golden Rose” in a magazine publication, but only as a book. I may have also submitted a reference interview to clarify the user’s meaning in the question. I also would explain more of the answer I gave, such as when WorldCat used 195for the date of the book. Question 2 Transcript: *** New responses start here *** > Needed by: 12/3/2012 > > Question: > How are archives organized and collected? How do students access > and use materials found in archival collections? > > name: XXXXXXX (removed by BB) > from: XXXXXXX@aol.com (removed by BB) > confirm: XXXXXX @aol.com (removed by BB) > location: Salem, VA/USA > area: Library > reason: Paper and presentation > school: Yes > sources_consulted: National Archives website > Hello from ipl2! Thank you for your question about how archives work and how to use them as students. I have found a few websites that may be of use in your research! I looked at a website from the American Jewish Archives. This page gives great general information on how archives work. This includes accession, which covers how collections work and rules on organizational records. Here is the link to that website: http://americanjewisharchives.org/syna/syn_archive_org.php IPL Project 8 The above website is from a reputable source as it is from a well known organization and has plenty of contact information for the group. I also looked at another website that had a PowerPoint presentation about archives posted. It consists of 27 slides covering accession, organization, types of material you find in archives, etc. I think it is relevant to your question because it covers organization and collections. Here is the link to the online PowerPoint: http://www.slideshare.net/verzosaf/organization-of-archival-materials#btnNext This link is quite long and could break, so here is a shortened version for your convenience. http://tinyurl.com/d36854m I trust this PowerPoint as a reliable source because it was presented at the 2002 PAARL Summer Conference. The last website I looked at for information focused on how to use archives as a student. The main answer on the website is to use them as primary sources. It also mentions that many states have a state archive collection. Here is the link to this source: http://www.archives.gov/education/history-in-the-raw.html I find this source to be reputable as it is from a government website. I also want to include a website that I found with links to your state historical society, and library which may be able to help you further in your research on a more local level. This can be found at: http://www.statearchives.us/virginia.htm In my search for these sources I found all of them using Google. For the first two websites I used the search terms: "archives organization" IPL Project 9 For the third website I again used Google, but used the search terms: "how do students use archives" And for the last website, again using Google, I used the search terms: "Virginia State Archives" http://www.google.com I hope this will help you in your research. Thank you for using ipl2 for your research questions! Feel free to come back with any questions you may have! Feedback to Question 2: Hi Brittany, You provided the patron with an excellent, well laid out answer to their question, following the guidelines for the ipl2 very well. Each of the sources you provided will give them information that should aid them in completing their project. You provided your search strategy in a clearly laid out manner that will allow the patron to duplicate the search or to do a similar search for additional resources. There are just a couple of things to note for future reference. You stated that your second resource was reliable because it came from the 2002 PAARL Summer Conference. It would be a good idea, when using any kind of acronym like this, to clarify exactly what PAARL is so that the patron understands fully why they are reliable. The second issue was that for each of the resources provided you stated that it was a website you looked at, it may be better to state something like “this is a source I located for you.” It comes across as a bit more professional, which is a key when providing reference services. Other than these two areas this was an excellent answer. Keep up the good work! XXXXXX (removed by BB) Log to Question 2: 1. Amount of time spent on the question. IPL Project 10 Claimed on: Mon, 26 Nov 2012 07:11:34 Answered on: Mon, 26 Nov 2012 18:12:41 Time to answer: Approximately 2.5 hours. 2. Sources consulted and strategies used (besides the ones used for the answer). Since archives were covered in a couple of my classes this quarter I first searched through my lecture notes to see what they had to say and if I could find any sources off of that information to help me answer my question. Then I searched Google using specific terms from the question. After finding enough information to answer the user’s question I started to look for some local sources for the user to get in contact with for more information. Before I settled on the website I gave out, I found separate sites for state libraries and archives but the site I ended up using included both. 3. Critique of each question that indicates your level of satisfaction with the answers you provided. I am quite satisfied with my reply to this question. Unlike in my first question I already had a little background knowledge of archives and felt more comfortable looking for information on the topic. Also because of what I had learned in classes I could tell that the information on the websites was reliable. I felt even more confident in my answer after receiving the feedback that I got. Through my training at work I have learned that nit picky answers like that are meant to perfect a sound response. There were many sources to choose from and many reinforced the information found on the other websites, which was beneficial in searching for credible information. 4. Anything you would do differently in the future. I think the main thing I would do differently in addressing this specific question again would be to search for more information on archives rather than many sites that reinforced a basic answer to the question. Question 3 Transcript: *** New responses start here *** > Needed by: 12/5/2012 > > Question: > What is the definetion of system? Is Islam has a democracy > system.Plz explain. > > name: XXXXXX (removed by BB) IPL Project 11 > from: XXXXXXXX @yahoo.com (removed by BB) > confirm: XXXXXX @yahoo.com (removed by BB) > location: Faisalabad > area: Religion > reason: In assignment > school: Yes > sources_consulted: What is the political system of islam? > Greetings from ipl2! I found your question on the political system of Islam very interesting to answer. I also located some information on the relationship between Islam and Democracy. I hope what I have found will help you start your research. One of the websites I found for you discusses the basics of the political system of Islam. I think it will be helpful for you to break it down to the basics first. Here is the link to that website: http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/224/ This source has credible information on it that is mentioned in the other websites I have located for you. The next source is from a page called Discover Islam. This page starts with the basics and then develops more details on several parts of Islam. The link for that website is as follows: http://www.ediscoverislam.com/About-Islam/Islamic-Law-and-legalSystems/islamic-political-system-islamic-state This link is quite long and could break, so here is a shortened version for your convenience. http://tinyurl.com/amwhrw The above site also has several other pages about its teachings. The information on it is also found on several sources. The last website I located for you on the Islam political system reinforces the information found on the last two websites. IPL Project 12 It can be found at this link: http://www.islam101.com/politics/politicalsystem.htm The above source also brings in the other part of your question about Democracy in Islam. The last site I located deals with Islam and Democracy coexisting. It can be found here: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/10/1021_031021_islamicdemocr acy.html This link is quite long and could break, so here is a shortened version for your convenience. http://tinyurl.com/63mbm The National Geographic is a credible source as it is a widely known publication. All of these websites were found in various Google searches. I found the first three websites using the search terms: "political system of Islam" The last website I found using the search terms: "democracy in Islam" http://www.google.com I hope this information has been helpful in your research! Feel free to come back to ipl2 with any other questions you may have. Thank you for using ipl2! Although I requested feedback for Question 3 I have not received any comments since submitting the question. Log to Question 3: 1. Amount of time spent on the question. IPL Project 13 Claimed on: Sun, 02 Dec 2012 19:31:08 Answered on: Mon, 03 Dec 2012 17:51:34 Time to answer: Approximately 4 hours. 2. Sources consulted and strategies used (besides the ones used for the answer). For this question I began by doing a general search for Islam and reading what sites like Wikipedia had to say on the topic, as I was not particularly familiar with much information on Islam. I then proceeded to look for information pertaining to the user’s question. The question is phrased in a manner that could be confusing and it was close to the need by date so I tried to find enough information to cover all of the different ways the question could have been meant. First, I looked for sources to answer what type of political system Islam has. After finding several sources on this I then looked for resources that looked at touched upon democracy in Islam in case the user meant a combination of the two. 3. Critique of each question that indicates your level of satisfaction with the answers you provided. This question was a bit more difficult to answer than the other two. Again I was rather unfamiliar with the subject. I thought I had covered the question from all angles, but now as I look at it yet again, I wonder if the user meant to ask for a simple definition of either a democracy, or of the political system of Islam. It was also difficult to find several reliable sources on this topic. Most sources had information so similar that it seemed almost the same thing over and over. 4. Anything you would do differently in the future. Looking back I think that I would look for more variant sources on the topic of Islam to see if that would give me more information than the websites that I did find. I think I would have also tried to submit a reference interview to better understand the user’s needs. Reaction: A brief (700-1000 word) reflection on your overall experience with email reference including: 1. How you think the interaction might have varied in an in-person encounter or a live chat encounter. 2. How you think email reference will fit into the future of reference services. 3. Overall, what have you learned from this project? 4. How this experience will affect your future work as an information professional. IPL Project 14 Before this project my only experience with email reference services was in an earlier assignment from this quarter. I still greatly prefer live time reference services, either in-person or via chat for several reasons. It is easier to stay on subject, you do not lose track of emails, and there is a better chance for a somewhat immediate answer. I do not mean to say that my ipl2 experience was a bad one. As a process it seems to be run efficiently. I would have been much more interested if I could have learned more about the entire process that a submitted question goes through instead of just that it needs to be answered. I also would have liked to know why I never received feedback for my third question. Sometimes minor things like these can cause someone to turn away from volunteering. I think my responses would have turned out much differently if they had taken place in-person or via live chat. Here the patron would have received an answer in a timelier manner. I would have been able to conduct a reference interview asking for clarification on the two questions I answered that were unclear. In the question about archives I would have been able to ask if the information on the state archives would be pertinent to the information the user needed. On the other hand, I would have to be careful with my nonverbal cues as well as my tone. This would be of particular importance in my first and third questions because of the foreign culture factor. I also would have had less time to look for the answers, which could be detrimental to the quality of the answer. IPL Project 15 The future of email reference is uncertain in my opinion. In today’s society people grow up with a vague understanding at a minimum of how to use the Internet. People want everything, including information as fast as they can get it. They also prefer not to confront people face-to-face or talk on the telephone. Email covers the desire for lack of confrontation. It does not, however, answer questions very quickly. For this main reason I believe that email reference services will be an ever-stagnant option. I call it ever stagnant because I do not see it going away, but I do not see it excelling. I think live chat services will be the main option going into the future because of their immediacy in response. I learned several things from participating in this project. I learned how to follow a template to answer a reference question. This allows a constant in the form of the response, which would be particularly helpful to users that are learning English. I also learned that services like ipl2 exist! Before this project I only knew about emailing an individual reference librarian rather than the large service done by ipl2. Although I already knew how to find credible resources, as I use them for my own papers and projects, it was a new experience to have to explain the entire process to someone who may not understand the research process. I sometimes had difficulty finding the right words to describe why certain websites that I chose were credible. IPL Project 16 This experience will help my future in an information career. The project allowed me to do reference work that I had not done before this, while also giving me the chance to reflect upon the experience. I believe that it is this chance to reflect that is a large part of the opportunity here because at a reference desk the reference librarian will likely be hit with question after question, which does not allow the librarian the time to think back on the service he/she provides for each question. The transcripts of your questions that are available after the question has been answered are also another useful way to look back and evaluate your service. This would allow you to make changes in the service you provide much more easily than someone who purely works for in-person groups. All in all my experience with the ipl2 was a positive one and I would enjoy continuing to work with a similar service in the future.
