INVITATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The fate and significance of cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries in former Poland and Silesia given to the Orthodox Church or to Protestant Churches

Janów Podlaski, Uroczysko “Zaborek” (guest house and open-air ethnographic museum)

The conference is organised within the framework of the project Cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries on the territory of former Poland and in Silesia in the 18th and 19th centuries: fate, significance, cataloguing (Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s

“National Programme for the Development of Humanities”, no. 11H 11 021280). The coorganisers are: Institute of History and International Relations, Siedlce University of Natural

Sciences and Humanities, and Wrocław Friends of History Society, branch of the Polish

Historical Society.

Subject of the conference:

1. The problem of the ownership of buildings and furnishings from monasteries dissolved in former Poland and Silesia in the late 18th and throughout 19th century

2. The problem of the transfer by the state of buildings and/or furnishings from the dissolved monasteries to other Churches

3. The Orthodox Church and the dissolutions of Greek and Roman Catholic monasteries

4. Protestant Churches and the dissolutions of monasteries

5. The fate of churches and other buildings belonging to the dissolved monasteries and given to the Orthodox Church or Protestant Churches

6. The fate of the furnishings from the dissolved monasteries given to the Orthodox Church or

Protestant Churches

7. The fate of institutions run by the dissolved monasteries (schools, hospitals, printing houses etc.) given to the Orthodox Church or Protestant Churches

8. The question of restitution of movable and immovable property belonging to the dissolved monasteries given to the Orthodox Church or Protestant Churches

Please send the proposed titles of your full papers (up to 20 min.) and short communication papers (up to 10 min.) to: derwich@gmail.com before 30 March 2015 .

The conference fee is PLN 200. The fee covers: board, conference materials and participation in accompanying events. The project participants will also get free accommodation.

Accommodation (including breakfast) for those who are not project participants is PLN 110 per night. We will publish positively reviewed papers as part of our conference proceedings;

each published author will receive two copies of the volume. No travel costs will be reimbursed.

The organisers will cover the costs of speakers’ participation, provided the speakers submit their papers in a version that is ready for publication or will guarantee in writing that such a version will be delivered by 1 October 2015.

At the end of the conference, on 5 September, the organisers have planned a day-long tour of nearby dissolved monasteries.
