Historical Background
The Maryland colonial assembly created the port of Baltimore at Locust point in 1706 because of the tobacco trade. Locust point, once served as the center for Baltimore’s Polish, Irish and Italian communities. This neighborhood is also the home of Fort McHenry.
The County of Baltimore was founded and named after Cecilluis Calvert, Lord Baltimore, in 30 July 1729.
Cecilluis Calvert, who was the son of George Calvert, was the first Lord Baltimore County Cork, Ireland in
1625.
When the American Revolution was over the town of Baltimore was incorporated as the city of
Baltimore in 1796 and was made an independent city in 1851.
The city was the site of the Battle of Baltimore during the war of 1812. The British burned down
Washington DC and then attacked Baltimore, 13, September 1814. The US forces stationed at Fort
McHenry were able to hold off the British attack. This is also the place where the Star-Spangled Banner alum was composed by a Baltimore lawyer, Francis Scott Key who happened to be a board one of the
British ships and witnessed the bombardment. The Star-Spangled Banner became the official national anthem of the United States in 1931.
In February 1904, the great Baltimore fire destroyed over 15,000 buildings in 30 hours, leaving 70 blocks of the downtown area burned. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baltimore_City_Archives&oldid=469927820

I have not really been able to explore Maryland Archives by foot, but will be doing so this week coming up when I return to Baltimore to visit family over the Memorial week. The Maryland State Archive online though has given me so much that I don’t need to travel around much at all. This site which is also linked to the Baltimore City Archives can help you with any questions and records you might need about

your ancestors. There were however a few things they did not have access to and Amy, one of the archives curators, very friendly, linked me to where I needed to go. This is a web-site Amy suggested: http://historicgraphics.com/ to find some information on some local photographers that had taken some of my relative’s photos. For the orphanage and the infant asylum, Catholic institutions- there is a paragraph about them further down on this page: http://www.stmarys.edu/archives/arc_genealogy.htm
She lead me to some very important leads.
