University of Maryland’s TERPhilanthropy Fund Request for Proposals- Spring 2014 $10,000 available for programs that work with the childhood cancer community. Applications due by Friday, March 28th at 6pm (EST) Applications and questions should be sent to: cpphils@gmail.com Introduction Each semester students select one or more issues to fund through the “TERPhilanthropy Fund.” This semester, the students intend to award $10,000 to support high-impact programs at qualified nonprofit organizations. This grant is available through the generosity of the University of Maryland’s Honors College and the donor support of the School of Public Policy’s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. The Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership views every grant as the start of a longterm relationship between your organization, the university, and our expanding undergraduate and graduate programs. For example, along with our funding, students in other courses are currently volunteering and developing strategic projects that advance the work of grantees. Our Mission and Values For the Spring 2014 semester, our mission is to fund an organization(s) that works with the childhood cancer community to positively impact the quality of life of children and their families while dealing with a life-threatening illness. We value the following: A holistic approach Transparency Low overhead Collaboration Passion and vision for the work Optimism Eligible Proposals Eligible organizations must have a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. We are looking for organizations who serve communities in the Washington D.C., Prince Georges County, Montgomery County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and/or Baltimore County area, but the applicant may be headquartered outside of these areas. Application Process The application process will include three stages: (i) an initial review; (ii) a short phone interview with organizational leadership conducted by University of Maryland students; and (iii) a site visit. Only finalists will proceed to the later stages. In your grant application email, please provide your availability for the following: Available days and times for a 15-20 minute phone interview between April 7th-11th with the organizational leadership. Thursday, April 10th between 2:00pm and 4:30pm (EST) is preferable. Available days and times for a 60-minute site visit between the days of April 19-28th, including but not limited to Thursday, April 24th between 2:00pm and 4:30pm. In the past, the most successful site visits included an opportunity for the students to see the organization in action and interact with program participants (where applicable). Please consider this when proposing your programs, should the students select your organization for a site visit. Notification We will notify every organization by early April concerning their application status. Please remember the application is due by March 28th at 6:00pm. Total amount of grant request Key Selection Criteria Throughout the grant selection process, we will be looking for grantees who demonstrate the following: A clear and unique mission with a focus on serving children with cancer, ages 0-20, and their families Financial transparency Impact in Washington D.C., Prince Georges County, Montgomery County, Howard County, Ann Arundel County, Baltimore City and/or Baltimore County A developed model of sustainable impact Evidence of the potential impact of our funds Research grants need not apply Application Narrative Please be concise using a maximum of 2-3 pages. Your application narrative should respond to the following questions: 1. What is your mission statement? Based on this, what are the plans of your organization for the next year? 2. How would our funds affect your plans? How critical is our funding to your organization? 3. What separates your organization from other organizations like you? 4. What do you consider to be your major past projects/accomplishments? 5. Describe your collaborative efforts and community relationships. Project Budget Narrative Please include a detailed one-page project budget including information regarding specific use of funds for the grant being requested. Requested funds can cover administrative and program costs. Completed Application A completed application should be submitted electronically as one Adobe PDF document (please name your.pdf file as the organization’s name: e.g., “myorganization.pdf). A completed application will include a: One-page cover sheet, Two - three page application narrative, Organization budget, and One page project budget. Applications should be submitted with normal margins, single spaced and in 12 point Times New Roman font.
