Computer-assisted translation
Computer-assisted translation, computer-aided translation, or CAT is a form of
translation wherein a human translator translates texts using computer software designed
to support and facilitate the translation process.
Computer-assisted translation is sometimes called machine-assisted, or machine-aided,
translation.

In practice, computer-assisted translation is a complex process involving specific tools
and technology adaptable to the needs of the translator, who is involved in the whole
process and not just in the editing stage. The computer becomes a workstation where the
translator has access to a variety of texts, tools and programs: for example, monolingual
and bilingual dictionaries, parallel texts, translated texts in a variety of source and target
languages, and terminology databases. Each translator can create a personal work
environment and transform it according to the needs of the specific task. Thus computerassisted translation gives the translator on-the-spot flexibility and freedom of movement,
together with immediate access to an astonishing range of up-to-date information. The
result is an enormous saving of time.

T
wo or three decades ago the work tools of a translator included a
typewriter and a collection of printed dictionaries, which are not
difficult to handle. However, as a result of incredibly rapid progress in
the field of electronic hardware and computer software, nowadays an
important component of any translator's professional competence is
the technological one, which, first of all, assumes skills in handling
electronic resources and tools .

Now that we hear the expression "translator's work tools," the first thing that comes
to mind is a personal computer (a desktop or laptop computer, depending on one's
personal preferences) and, surely, the Internet. Nobody translates the way they used
to thirty or forty years ago because convenient electronic dictionaries, special
translation software, and Internet resources are available, which allows us to keep
up to date. This is especially important if we take into account the fact that we have
entered the 21st century and virtually all translators use the Internet, the computer,
and other electronic means in their work.
http://translationjournal.net/journal/55computers.htm
Software for computer aided translation or software for automatic translation have
become fundamental for professional translators.
These are the tools that most professional translators work with. These tools do not
provide direct translations but provide a support system that helps translators to
work faster and more accurately.
Translators could be worried about the fact that software might finally threaten this
human craft but there is no reason for this concern. Since translation language is
very specific, professional translators are increasingly participating in updating
those electronics tools. Software helps translators process large amounts of text
more efficiently.

1. WEB PAGE TRANSLATORS (HTML)

Definition:
Learning website localization is a logical first step to understanding the
more technical aspects of the "science" of translation. Starting from simple
web content creation to basic design using HTML (the building blocks of
the web).
Translators often have difficulties when translating HTML documents, as they
are not sure which sections of the file are to be translated and which are to be
left unchanged. The HTML File Translator is a tool for the easy and efficient
translation of HTML documents into other languages. It shows all visible and
hidden elements in a HTML document that must be translated.
While studying topics on localization and machine translation ; you have come across
certain online sites that offer free service web page translation. Those are done by the
machine without the aid of a human translator. Examples include :
www.worldlingo.com
www.appliedlanguage.com
www.google.com

TARJIM :
However , the output is till poor and in need of post editing as is the case
with machine translated texts. Hence ; a need for softwares that work as a
tool assisting a human translator in such a domain like web pages is a
necessity .
