Game of Chance Project
The purpose of this project is to use a game of chance to compare experimental and theoretical probabilities. You are to research
carnival games and games of chance, build a working carnival game or game of chance, use that game to collect data, use the data to
compare the experimental and theoretical probabilities that apply to your game, and apply those probabilities to the financial aspect of
running such a game. We will hold a game day so you can collect your data. You will also summarize the project in a report as
outlined below. This project must demonstrate work of the highest quality. There will be 4 major grades and 6 daily grades taken
throughout the project.
Game – (2 Major Grades) 100 points DUE FRIDAY, February 24th





100 points – The game is well-made, easy to play, and well decorated to attract attention.
80 points – The game is playable, but problems of design or construction are evident.
60 points – The game is difficult to play or is poorly made.
40 points – The game is not playable.
0 points – There is no game to play.
Report – (2 Major Grades) 10 points for each part (100 total) DUE TUESDAY, March 3rd
a) Rules of the game
A complete written description of the game is provided along with a diagram or sketch of the game. The rules of the game
and how to earn prizes are clearly stated and easy to understand. A list of materials is included indicating who is responsible
to obtain each part.
b) Probability Model
Correctly prepares a model of the probabilities of winning the game. You must include a Venn diagram, a tree diagram, or an
area model. The model is fully and accurately labeled.
c) Theoretical Probability of Winning the Game
Correctly computes the theoretical probabilities of winning the game showing all work and fully explaining all steps.
d) Odds of Winning your game
Correctly computes the odds of winning and losing your game showing all work and fully explain all steps.
e) Expected Costs (same as expected value)
Correctly computes the expected cost of prizes based on the probabilities of winning the game and assuming 50 people will
play your game. All work is fully shown explaining all steps.
f) Expected Profit
Correctly computes the expected profit of the game day assuming 50 people will play your game and subtracting your
expected cost of prizes. All work is fully shown explaining all steps.
g) Experimental Probability of Winning the Game
Correctly computes the experimental probability of winning the game. Game has at least 50 plays of the game in order to
establish a realistic experimental probability. All work is full shown explaining all steps. The game day data collection sheet
is attached.
h) Actual Cost
Correctly computes the actual cost of the prizes awarded on Carnival Day. Calculations agree with game day data collection
sheet. All work is fully shown explaining all steps.
i) Actual Profit
Correctly computes the actual profit of Carnival Day for every attempt and subtracting the actual cost of prizes. Calculations
agree with game day data collection sheet. All work is fully shown explaining all steps.
j) Comparison
A comparison of the theoretical probabilities with the experimental probabilities is provided with a plausible reason for any
discrepancies. There is also a comparison of the expected cost of the prizes with the actual cost of the prizes and a
comparison of the expected profit with the actual profit. An explanation of differences in these calculations is also provided.
