A new pop-up exhibition exploring the use of light and shadow in Sir John Soane’s famous
house-museum is to open for London Design Fesitval 2014 (13 – 21 September). Light and
Shadow displays work from some of today’s best contemporary designers and artists within
the historic room of the Museum’s No.12 Breakfast Room. With a wide range of objects,
from traditional prints from artist Paul Schütze to prototype kinetic lights from Ab Rogers,
the exhibition continues Sir John Soane’s programme of pop-up shows.
The exhibition provides a contemporary insight into Regency Architect Sir John Soane’s use
of light in the house that he designed, lived in and housed his extensive collections during
the early 18th Century. He used framing devices and vistas throughout the building to fully
accentuate the architectural effects of light in some spaces, or create luminous voids in
others.
Artists and designers that feature in the exhibit are;
 Multi-disciplinary artist, musician and photographer Paul Schütze
 Spandana Gopal, Founder and Creative Director of new design brand Tiipoi, which
harnesses the manufacturing capabilities that exist in India today
 UK Based interior design brand Mineheart known for their re-appropriation of
classical imagery and antique design
 British Industrial designer Sebastian Bergne, renown for making everyday objects
special with his essential and human approach to design
 Ab Rogers, Founder of Ab Rogers Design and Director of Interior Design at London’s
Royal College of Art
 Critically acclaimed Italian architect Antonia Cardillo, described by Wallpaper
magazine as ‘one of the most significant architects of our time’
All pieces from the exhibition are available to buy and each purchase supports Sir John
Soane’s Museum and its work. Xanthe Arvanitakis, Managing Director of Soane Museum
Enterprises says “we are absolutely thrilled with Light and Shadow. Sir John Soane’s
Museum truly is a myriad of light and shadow, and to showcase these 21st Century
responses to Soane’s 18th Century home for London Design Festival is a wonderful
opportunity.

Notes to Editors
Sir John Soane’s Museum:
The architect Sir John Soane’s house, museum and library at No.13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields has been a public
museum since the early 19th century. On his appointment as Professor of Architecture at the Royal
Academy in 1806 Soane (1753-1837) began to arrange his books, classical antiquities, casts and models so
that students of architecture might benefit from access to them. In 1833 he negotiated an Act of
Parliament to preserve the house and collection after his death for the benefit of ‘amateurs and students’
in architecture, painting and sculpture. Today Sir John Soane’s Museum is one of the country’s most
unusual and significant museums with a continuing and developing commitment to education and creative
inspiration. The museum is open free: Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, 10am-5pm. It is also open on the first
Tuesday evening of each from 6-9pm. www.soane.org Sir John Soane’s Museum is a Non-Departmental
Public Body (NDPB) whose prime sponsor is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
