Job Description and Person Specification JOB DESCRIPTION Post title: Senior Teaching Fellow in Chinese Language Academic Unit/Service: Confucius Institute and Faculty of Humanities/ Modern Languages Faculty: Humanities Career Pathway: Education, Research and Enterprise (ERE) *ERE category: Education pathway Posts responsible to: Director Centre for Language Study/ Director, Confucius Institute Posts responsible for: Confucius Institute Chinese language teachers, tutors and volunteers Post base: Office-based/Non Office-based (see job hazard analysis) Level: 5 Job purpose To teach at all levels, to develop approaches to teaching and learning, and to undertake leadership, management and engagement activities. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 1. To coordinate the Chinese language teaching carried out by the Confucius 15 % Institute in schools, colleges and within the University. Taking responsibility for assessment and course evaluation, training and mentoring of Hanban teachers and volunteers, promotion of HSK Chinese language testing 2. To prepare materials, teach classes and carry out assessment and monitoring activities for Chinese language courses and China related courses (dependent upon specialism) within the University and to maintain self-access learning materials for all classes taught, and to contribute to the development of new teaching approaches and course proposals, and to the design of curricula which are academically excellent, coherent and intellectually challenging. 60% Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 3. To liaise with the administrative team in matters relating to student registration, 15 % attendance, examinations and timetabling, to attend all relevant CI, Modern Languages and Centre for Language Study meetings, and more generally to contribute to the administration and management of Modern Languages . 4. To engage and establish a national reputation for original pedagogical research 5% (for example in Second Language Acquisition or in the delivery of language teaching methodologies, technologies and materials) and the enhancement of learning and teaching practice by disseminating findings and outcomes through leading peer-reviewed journals, presenting results at conferences, or exhibiting work at appropriate events. 5. To participate in the organisation and delivery of Chinese cultural events initiated by the CI 5% Internal and external relationships Member of the Confucius Institute, Centre for Language Study, Modern Languages and Faculty of Humanities, and of Departmental/ Faculty committees relevant to their administrative duties. Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Director, Centre for Language Study, Head of Modern Languages, and the Director of the Confucius Institute. New appointees will be assigned a senior colleague to guide their development and aid their integration into the Academic Unit and university. May collaborate with colleagues in other institutions on original teaching and learning practice. Special Requirements The postholder should be interested in developing communicative, learner-centred methodologies for language teaching and in being part of a highly motivated, innovative team. Experience of managing a small team of people would be an advantage as would an ability to teach some other area in the field of China Studies Document1ERE Level 5 – Education Pathway – Senior Teaching Fellow 2 PERSON SPECIFICATION Criteria Essential Qualifications, knowledge and experience Native or near native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and English. Fully competent in the use of pinyin and simplified characters. Native Chinese speakers shall have attained Grade A (Level 2) in the Mandarin test held by China’s State Language Work Committee. Non-native Chinese speakers should have reached new HSK level 6 in Mandarin Desirable How to be assessed CV and interview PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in teaching, and/or Chinese area studies CV 5 years experience in Chinese language teaching or 2 years of teaching in a Confucius Institute, including experience at a range of University levels including advanced CV CV and interview Track record of development and delivery of teaching at undergraduate level.
