Mathematics Faculty Aims The aims of the faculty support the general aims of the school and strive to: Promote an appreciation of the applications of Mathematics. Develop each student’s individual mathematical capability. Employ a range of teaching techniques providing equal opportunities to all students. Support other areas of the school curriculum by enhancing each pupil’s numeracy skills. Facilities The faculty is housed in a suite of 9 dedicated rooms, all of which contain interactive whiteboards. Although there is no dedicated Maths IT suite, the school has several ICT suites each with white boards that the Mathematics faculty can book usage and the department has access to laptops and ipads as required. Staffing There are 13 full time and 1 part time Teaching staff in the faculty spanning a broad spectrum of experience. Richard Edge Assistant Headteacher, Executive Head of Mathematics Peter Roberts Head of Maths, i/c KS4 Sharon Walker Lead Practitioner Mathematics & Maths Hub Lead. Susan Fletcher Head of KS4 Mathematics James Rimmer Head of KS3 Mathematics, ‘Gifted’ Coordinator Jenny Caton Head of KS5 Mathematics Aiden Newhouse Mathematics Teacher Hannah Stuttard Mathematics Teacher David Patterson Mathematics Teacher Mark Sweeney Mathematics Teacher Paul Hunt Mathematics teacher, Part Time Niamh O’Connor Mathematics/Science Teacher Helen Middleman 1:1 Mathematics Graduate Pauline Mangan 1:1 Mathematics Graduate Sarah Barwell LFC Link Mathematics Teacher All members of Staff teach at Key Stages 3 and 4, and many also teach modules at Key stage 5. Curriculum Pupils are set on ability throughout KS3 and KS4. They have 3 one hour lessons of mathematics per week in Y7, 8 and 9. In Y10 students have 4 hours. In Y11 the students currently have 3 hours per week although the move to 4 hours per week across KS4 will phase through next year. The Collins Frameworking scheme, which is based on the KS3 strategy, is used in years 7 to 8. Year 9 follow the KS4 pathway. At KS4, pupils are taught to specific tiers of entry and are currently following the Edexcel linear specification for which results are usually above national average for both 3 and 4 levels of progress. In year 12, A/S students follow the AQA course by taking 2 core modules and a module from Decision, Mechanics and Statistics. Those students continuing into year 13 will complete two more core and one more applied modules. Further Mathematicians are taught discretely and would be expected to complete the A level in year 12 and to complete the further Maths course in Year 13. The number pupils opting to take A Level mathematics has grown in recent years. Mr. R Edge Assistant Headteacher, Executive Head of Mathematics Headteacher’s Note We took the decision, 18 months ago, to have a Head and Executive Head of Mathematics (and English). This is in recognition of the pressures and demands of leading these 2 subject areas. Richard was recruited from Wilmslow HS, with a track record of excellent leadership of Mathematics for many years. Peter Roberts, arrived from Broadgreen HS in January. Their leadership has brought vision, a passion for pedagogy and a genuine understanding of the future of Mathematics at High Schools. The Mathematics team is first class; they work hard, support each other and produce excellent results. We often are asked to support other schools. We are happy to do this, on occasions, but not at the expense of the achievement of Rainhill pupils. This appointment help make the team even stronger. John Pout Headteacher
