The North and South River Docks are equipped with a “Dry Pipe” fire water system. “Dry Pipe”
means that the system stays dry until it is activated. This acts as a means of winterization, it
keeps the fire water systems that are above ground from freezing in cold weather.
1._____ _____ ________ North River Dock
a) There is a fire water header on the road just south of the
north side flare. It has a PIV (post indicator valve) next to it
to activate it. After using this header close the PIV off and
open the drain valve on the bottom of the header.
b) Two fire water monitors on the platform share a PIV on the
shore, just east of the retaining wall, that will activate both
monitors. After using these monitors close the PIV off and
open the drain valve on the piping under the platform.
2._____ _____ ________ South River Dock
a) One fire water header located just north of the red dye tank.
This fire water header is operated by the PIV just east of it.
After using this header close the PIV and open the drain
valve at the bottom of it.
b) One fire water monitor on the south dock operated by a
PIV east of the platform. After using this monitor close the
PIV off and open the drain valve located on the piping just
south of the PIV.
Caution: Sometimes these systems are used and are not closed and
drained. While this doesn’t present a problem in the warmer months,
in the winter months this could cause the system to freeze and bust.
Please check these systems to be sure that they are closed off and
drained off in cold freezing weather.
