Wakefield Regional Partnership for Initial Teacher
Training (WRPITT)
Do you enjoy working with children and young adults?
Are you committed to supporting them to achieve their best?
Do you want to make a difference to their lives?
If your answer to each of these three questions is a resounding ‘yes’ then read
on …
The Wakefield Partnership for Initial Teacher Training (WPITT) has been training
teachers via the highly successful Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) since 2002.
The partnership was judged to be an outstanding (grade 1) provider for initial teacher
training by Ofsted in its inspection in June 2009 which recognised the strong links
between Wakefield schools and the Local Authority in the design and delivery of the
innovative and collaborative programme.
The partnership has always been characterised by high quality outcomes for its
trainee teachers, with very high retention and employability levels. Over 90% of
trainees in the 2011-12 cohort secured teaching posts within Wakefield.
It is on this very strong foundation that WPITT is planning to move forward in
developing a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) partnership through
offering core ITT and School Direct training places in collaboration with the Aspire
and Wakefield Regional Teaching School Alliances and other Wakefield cluster
schools.
The two teaching schools, together with Wakefield Local Authority, will form the hub
of the new partnership which will be known as the Wakefield Regional Partnership
for Initial Teacher Training.
School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) core
places
At present Wakefield Regional Partnership for Initial Teacher Training (WRPITT) is
awaiting confirmation of accreditation from the Teaching Agency to become a SCITT
provider of core ITT places in partnership with the Aspire and Wakefield Regional
Teaching Schools. The outcome of the partnership’s proposal for SCITT provision
should be known on Friday, 16th November.
Applications to train in a SCITT partner school will need to be made through the
Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) at www.gttr.ac.uk. Information about the
WRPITT programme will be uploaded to the GTTR website as soon as possible
pending the outcome of the proposal.
Please note: the closing date for primary applications is 1 December 2012.
However, as we anticipate strong competition for core places, we strongly
recommend that prospective candidates for both primary and secondary places
submit their applications as soon as possible following the announcement about
future provision.
Funding for core ITT places is through tuition fees paid by the participant. The
proposed tuition fee for core places with WRPITT is around £8000.
SCITT core places
Applications are invited for the following subjects/phases for candidates with at least
a 2:1 degree classification:


Primary (all key stages)
Secondary – Chemistry, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern
Languages, Music, Physical Education and Physics.
School Direct Training Programme places
The Aspire Teaching School Alliance, Wakefield Regional Teaching School Alliance
and Wakefield LA will also work together in partnership to offer School Direct places.
The lead school for both primary and secondary School Direct places is Wakefield
City Academy.
There are two strands to the School Direct Training Programme:
1. School Direct Training Programme (funded by tuition fees)
2. School Direct Training Programme (salaried - funded by a grant from the
Teaching Agency)
Please note: the School Direct Training Programme (salaried) is an employment
based route and is only for high quality graduates with at least three years’ work
experience.
As with core places, the School Direct tuition fee funded route will cost approximately
£8000.
From 5 November 2012 candidates will be able to apply to the lead school
(Wakefield City Academy) through the Teaching Agency’s School Direct application
system.
Training bursaries for tuition fee funded programmes
You could be eligible for a tax-free bursary of up to £20,000 depending on the

Recruitment
If you would like to train to teach in a WRPITT school, and for secondary have at
least 50% of your degree in one of the subjects listed above, we would be interested
in hearing from you.
As well as a 2:1 degree classification, to be considered for a SCITT core and/or a
School Direct training placement, you must have a GCSE grade C or above or
equivalent in mathematics and English, and be committed to training to teach in a
partnership school. Primary candidates also require GCSE science Grade C or
above or equivalent. Please note we do not accept level 2 qualifications as
equivalent to GCSE.
Equivalency Tests
For applicants who do not have GCSE mathematics, English or science at grade C
or above, equivalency tests from ET Equivalency Testing will be accepted. Please
see 'Related Links' for further information.
Please note: Equivalency tests must have been undertaken and successfully passed
prior to submitting your application.
Applications from candidates with overseas qualifications must have a comparable
statement from the National Recognition Information Centre for the UK (UK NARIC)
to support their application. Further details about UK NARIC can be found in the
'Related Links'.
Safeguarding
All successful applicants are required to complete an enhanced Criminal Records
Disclosure check, detailing all current and spent convictions or cautions.
Training Overview
All three training routes offered by WRPITT follow the same pattern in relation to
programme structure. The annual programme cycle operates from 1st September
until the end of the academic year. Participants will spend the majority of their time in
a lead school with a second school and cross-phase placement in the first half of the
spring term. There will be an enhancement placement for two weeks in the summer
term which is based on individual needs, interests and priorities.
When trainees are awarded a place on the course an Initial Needs Analysis (INA)
takes place that highlights skills already demonstrated and areas for development.
This will include audits of subject knowledge and Professional Standards for
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This analysis is reviewed half termly, to ensure that
emerging needs are built into an Individual Training Plan (ITP). The ITP aims to
provide trainees with a live and working framework against which they can progress
and development can be gauged.
Trainees are assisted in this process by a comprehensive support package. This
provision includes support from a trained and experienced school-based trainer
(SBT), the school ITT Leader, and a Link Tutor. Link Tutors are experienced former
headteachers or senior leaders with an extensive knowledge of ITT to support
trainees.
Based on the INAs and the ITPs of the trainees, Wakefield offers an extensive
weekly training programme to complement the schools-based Professional Studies
Programme addressing the explicit needs of the trainee.
A comprehensive training programme is offered, including courses in vital
pedagogical skills such as Behaviour Management, Inclusion and Assessment for
Learning. Primary trainees also access specific subject training.
