Literacy 06-02-13
Sandra, any questions, let me know. 
No Guided reading
Give out topic and skills books – in topic books, all children will have a target of item to edit and
improve on. Give children time to focus on their mini target and work alongside some of them.
Specifically, AB and JK and DP
Look at the spell in skills books, share objective – can I write a rhyme in the style of WS? We are
going to edit, in a similar way as when we mirror wrote the battle on the heath but this time we are
going to be a 4th witch. You made your witchiars yesterday, you’re going to write about them now.
Get the children to look at the meter of the poem, if they can, click along to it as I read.
Beats of 8!
Look at syllables – do they know what they are? Show them in names. Model how many syllables
there are in the first two lines. Children to work in pairs on counting the syllables.
Do they notice the rhyming couplets?
LA group working with BW will be looking at the witch two’s version and writing that.
A & MA will be working on witch three’s version. SM will be working with the middle group (yellow)
and making sure that they are on task, especially RO & JK and giving support to them.
The children will need to chop out adjectives and nouns and verbs to create their new version. They
will need to keep the syllable count the same and the rhyme.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Fillet of a desert snake,
In the cauldron fry and bake;
OR
Body of a filthy fly,
In the cauldron heat and fry;
By the end of the session, the children will have written their verse and talked it through with their
partner. Ensure they read each line to themselves. Does it fit the syllable pattern? Does it fit the
meter?
If time, we may share some. If not, this will be part of Thursday’s lesson.
